I know personally I've been wanting for a brighter light source (and potentially one which works effectively underwater). I mean beyond a certain room size torches become impractical, redstone torches same story, and lightstone doesn't often live up to its name (at least I don't think so) and occasionally looks rather odd.
To that end: I propose a new ore to be found in either the Nether, or potentially the Aether if that is ever added. (Seen rumors but not exactly sure if they're factual) That ore: Sunstone ore.
Esentialy it would behave much the same as any other ore block, when mined it would drop a single ore block which would then require smelting to gain an "ingot" or other. From there you'd probably need to use a crafting bench to make a "sunstone block". The ore itself would probably occur underground (clearly) and require either say an iron pick to harvest (like gold or other such things). If it did occur in the Aether (As I read it), it would probably be a bit risky to gather (near the underside of islands), or if it were in the Nether it might be burried quite deep, or occur near the lightstone deposits (as though they were the "veins" which create it). Figure it looks like all ores, though the "specks" in it would be a bright white/gold colour, and generate a dim light once revealed (a side exposed while mining).
Recipe would probably look something like this:
where = sunstone ingot
The end result of this would be a block which is a glowing white/gold on all sides and emits light in a wide radius and quite strongly. Essentialy came up with the idea of making something which resembles the sun in the main game (as corny as that sounds). This block would behave much like any other construction material: i.e. can be attached on all sides, disregards gravity, and has a defined destruction limit. I am however not sure what it would give if it were destroyed: a fully made sunstone block or component parts? Thoughts?
By that logic isn't diamond just an over-powered version of iron? Isn't a stone sword just an overpowered wood sword?
Yes. They are.
However, in this case we aren't talking about a progression of items from weakest to strongest as you become able to get the materials...you are talking about negating Glowstone completely by creating a brand new block/material.
Why not just ask for a way to boost Glowstone's brightness first?

Would have asked for a boosted glowstone but given the backlash I've seen on here against absolutely anyone who suggests a change to the core content I figured screw that.
And if it comes from the Aether (assuming you NEED glowstone to get there) it is a progression, not a replacement.

I've seen way more people get flamed over asking for a brand new block/material that serves only the purpose they want than I have seen when people ask for a additional use to an already existing block...assuming they make some attempt to keep it balanced and make it sensible.

And in that case, I'd say the suggestion belonged in the Aether thread...

Examples or GTFO.
*sigh* I can see where this is going... had hoped to avoid a bunch of whining puritins swamping a post but seems too late for that. And was the redundant swearing at me needed?
I admit there are a TON of ideas on here which should never be included (Jurassicraft, cars, modern firearms to name but the tip of the iceberg), but I've been watching this forum for months now and have seen some pretty silly arguments:
- against varrying drop frequency
- against repairing items
- against the bed (skipping nights was "unfair" or something, and might I remind you that is now implimented)
hmm. Im new to modding. but it could be done, the hard part for me is getting it to have a greater lightsource then a torch.
EDIT : CURRENT PROGRESS :
4 Sunstone bars make one Sunstone block. I still haven't changed the texture of either, but sunstone bars look like gold bars for now. There is no way to get Sunstone bars for now. My first mod. I'l try later to change some stuff. (Texture, were to get Sunstone bars...etc)

Who uses those for light anyway? That isn't their purpose.

Was just listing potential light sources, don't use them for that clearly... and suppose could have included raw lava or fire but eh...

List tags are malformed.
Logic failure fails.
Diamond is diamond, not iron. Stone is stone, not wood.
Merits of the suggestion aside, this is exactly just a superpowered take on Glowstone.

I have heard this a couple hundred times.
