Is it me or 1.16 made fortress location a royal pain? Their potential spawn locations are now contested by bastions, and with all the new biomes, spotting one in the distance is way harder. I lately just find myself re-creating the world with same seed in Creative and using /locate fortress. My most recent 1.17 world, nearest fortress was over 900 blocks away from 0,0.
Hence, suggestion: create an in-game way to find a fortress. We already have ways to locate ocean monuments, strongholds and mansions.
Potential methods:
Nether Explorer Map: can be found in a bastion chest, or ruined nether portal chest or be a trade result from a piglin. Maybe make it a special trade - piglins barter the map in exchange for a clock.
Compass: combine compass with crying obsidian (or nether brick). Compass now points towards nearest fortress center.
Eye of Nether: combine ender pearl with crying obsidian (or nether brick) Flies towards nearest fortress center.
They are rarer, and to make matters worse despite the fact that bastions now replace some of them. Because of the existence of other biomes, you can go for long stretches in the Nether without even finding one Fortress, thousands of blocks. It's actually a common complaint about 1.16.
Idk if this was fixed recently and made the fortresses appear in more biomes, but it does make getting to the Nether less rewarding than it was before in terms of finding structures. And I don't really make Soul Speed a high priority to get because it damages the boots just by taking advantage of the power up, the damage happens regardless of whether you touched fire or hostile mobs or not, as long as you ran on Soul Sand, you risked destroying your boots, worse if golden.
I'd sooner look for Horse armour than I would with Soul Speed books in Bastions, I don't know about everybody else, Soul Speed isn't the best enchantment though. sure you can get the Pigstep Disc and Snout Banners, but those are aesthetics and music, not really important for game advancement.
Nether Fortresses were kinda old and stale, but the remedy for that would be to update the loot that exists in fortresses,
overall, fortresses are still more helpful, they're needed for blaze rods and wither skulls.
forget the netherite scraps in Bastions, because they don't exist in sufficient quantities to upgrade your gear properly,
for that you still have to mine for ancient debris.
Just like strongholds are sought first and foremost for the End portal, not for some few chests.
With recent Nether updates making fortresses more rare and harder to locate, there should be an in-game method of finding one - similar to Eye of Ender method for strongholds or map method for mansions.

I'm pretty sure people who are into doing speed runs wouldn't appreciate RNG or dumb luck dragging out the game, because then it means they have to keep resetting worlds to get the best time, the non cheat way, or starting from the beginning using the same seed which is cheating.
I'm not interested in doing speed runs for myself, but having nether fortresses being made rarer means from this point going forward, me and friends have to put up with the fact that it takes a lot longer to get to End. No blaze rods means no eye of enders, which means no End portal.
I'm well aware of the fact that Nether fortresses are needed for in game progression.
the reason I prefer horse armour over soul speed, is the fact that there's no damage penalty for going faster on horses.
You're not punished for earning your higher stats in a legitimate way.
Horses can despawn, but if you store your horse armour away like I and friends did on my current world, it doesn't matter.
A new horse will spawn just as well on grass blocks later on.
This is more helpful overall because horses can be used in both the Overworld and in the Nether.
if you like exploring the Overworld like I do, horses can be very useful.

Maybe there could be a more common smaller structure like an abandoned waystation that would some how point you in the general direction of a Nether fortress?

Something like that would be useful if maps were made to be work properly inside the Nether, because trying to use maps inside the nether all you get is blank where bedrock ceiling is and perhaps some netherrack mixed in, which are blocking any possible view to either a nether fortress or a bastion.
"Maps work in the Nether, although the map must be crafted in the Nether. Maps crafted in the Nether do not work in the Overworld, and vice versa. Maps made in the Nether will not display any terrain because the roof of the world is covered in bedrock rendering them useless."
I like the idea of smaller ruined outpost structures in the Nether, built in a similar style to the fortresses, and scattered in the vicinity of nether fortresses. (It certainly seems like it would be a bit easier than trying to add in a means of mapping the Nether properly, and could be an interesting find anyways.)

or they could leave clues laying around that give hints to the whereabouts of the closest nether fortress.
they kind of exist already, but not very well, when you dig through the netherrack terrain you'd occasionally find a nether fortress by accident as me and friends have done before on our current server. Reason being is because you can find netherbricks where a Nether fortress would normally be, or you may walk right on top of a bridge platform where Wither Skeletons and Blazes are waiting for your arrival so they can try to give you reasons to hate them.
If you're digging through terrain you don't really have any idea where you're going, there is no active lodestone in the Nether unless you've placed one yourself, and this is probably the least reliable way to find a fortress, and it could potentially get you killed, even if lava didn't kill you, you'd still have to deal with hostile mobs from time to time and Wither skeletons happen to be the worst the Nether has to offer, when in groups. Ghast can be annoying, but they don't cause a Wither effect and if you're wearing good armour, they're only really a problem if you're on the edge of a cliff next to a lava lake.
The most reliable way to find a Nether fortress as you've figured out is by searching biome to biome on the surface where you can cover more ground in the shortest amount of time, but like I said without any clues it's a matter of luck if one generates at all, players have travelled for thousands of blocks before and not found a single one in that one session. I was ready to leave my server for a couple of months until a friend told me he found one in the opposite direction on my world. 1.16 made finding Nether fortresses a lot worse, before I wouldn't have this much trouble at all finding them.
Best option, IMHO, would be something similar to Eye of Ender. I.e. ender pearl + crying obsidian = Eye of Nether. Throw it and it flies in the direction of nearest fortress. Or ender pearl + netherite scrap if you want to make it more of a challenge.

This has really nothing to do with loot.
The reasons finding a fortress is important are:
Blazes (End access, potions)
Netherwart (potions)
Wither skulls (beacons)

Maps don't tend to be very useful inside the Nether, other than showing your position relative to another player if you're using a locator map.
You could use a lodestone and a compass to find your way back to a portal after you find a fortress,
but unless you remember the coordinates to the fortress you're likely to be wasting time,
or you could just make another portal inside the fortress as a convenient way to the Overworld and back.

Can anyone give me proper nether fortress lore? Nobody seems to have anything that makes sense, so could someone give me anything?
Do you have any idea what this thread/forum is about..?
I support the OP's idea btw.
