I think it would be really cool if there would be mountain rivers and waterfalls that actually originate from mountains and go down to the sea and big rivers.
Going with this suggestion I'd like water to run faster down steep hills or mountains
rapids would've been nice, they would present a genuine hazard in survival gameplay and make some rivers too risky to get across without a boat, bridge, ender pearl or the elytra.
They would also make bridges across rivers more useful, instead of just looking pretty.
The bridges could last forever so long as they were non flammable, or if they were wooden but had a lightning rod a dozen blocks away to deter the lightning bolts.
But having bridges serve an actual purpose in survival in the Overworld would make survival much more fun to play,
currently the only Overworld hazard bridges seem to help against are things like ravines, or making jungles safer by giving players less reasons to go back down to the ground from their treehouses, which isn't good enough imo.
Particle effect at the bottom of LARGE drops of water. Sort of a Niagara falls mist.
Underneath waterfalls they could make it so the mist effect underneath them allows you to hide from hostile mobs. Endermen teleport away from misty areas, but in the dark or at night time you still get Creepers, Skeletons and Zombies around these parts, but they don't notice you in the mist unless you hit them or run around. Meaning you can avoid them by sneaking around them while shrouded by the waterfall mist.
Waterfall mist could be a way to hide player bases too, but it would be less useful in PVP than it would be in single player or co-op.
Some of the terrain generation in the 1.18 update has been genuinely impressive- and it includes much better rivers. Waterfalls could use some work though- that is, some sort of custom terrain generate function to design bigger waterfalls, rather than just placing watersource blocks high up and hoping for the best.

Real rivers are also driven by rainfall as well as melting ice from the changing temperatures on the mountain tops.
Perhaps we could have actual lakes on some of the mountain peaks in Minecraft, with floating ice within them and large waterfalls that cascade off cliffs.
I still think water flows too slowly in the game though. And the speed of waterfalls isn't even affected by how steep the hill is in the game, it's all or nothing, no gradient.
Real rivers vary from calm steady flowing ones on relatively flat terrain, to rapids that are on a large downward slope.
Minecraft rivers are boring and are not a fun experience to navigate with boats in.
Yea exactly, thats what i meant, for example the rivers with stones sticking out of them, and actually dug in rivers going down hills
and it is common for plateaus to have water on top of them. Being so close to cloud region, mountains are the ideal natural water filters.
High up in the mountains it doesn't get hot enough to evaporate a significant amount of water away, and even though the air pressure is lower, it's not low enough to prevent a lot of ice from forming on mountains, at 0C or less, the water gets captured and frozen before it has a chance to go anywhere.
Current Minecraft mountains already have snow,
but there doesn't seem to be a lot of plateaus with lakes on them,
certainly not biome sized lakes that are connected to a river with a gigantic waterfall off a cliff.
I think things are going to change, according to the new experimental snapshots.
hopefully they used pictures of real life mountains for inspiration on how to generate the newer ones in 1.18.
Mountains are diverse, they can have snowy peaks, but they can also have lakes nearby on another part of the same mountain range.
A well known one is Lake Toba, an Indonesian Mountain formed by a supervolcano. If we can't have volcano biomes in Minecraft, at the very least, could we have these new mountain ranges that have lakes and giant waterfalls?

Here are a couple of examples
Full Support. Minecraft needs better rivers. Rivers should go from high up downwards, not straight at sea level creating weird islands.
My suggestions: Enhancements - Throwable Fire Charges - On Phantoms and Elytra. Also check out The Minecraftian Language. This signature is not here to waste your space.
In the upcoming 1.18 there will be more water sources in mountains, so it's proabably going to happen.
See recent experimental snapshots 5 and 6.
Ohh waterfalls are dope
