Well, not really a calendar. What I suggest is adding a timer that logs how many days have gone by since it was created.
It'd be a little round tool just like the compass and watch, except instead of showing an image it would show a number. Upon being constructed this number would be 1, and it would increase by 1 at dawn every day. It would continue to count upwards whether in your inventory or in a chest.
The number would be keyed to that specific calendar, so if you create a new calendar the new calendar would start at 1, regardless of what the numbers on your earlier calendars are. This would make it possible to mark the date of various accomplishments by crafting a new calendar on that day.
Calendars would be able to display up to 4 digits. Once it reaches 10,000 days the calendar would instead show an ellipsis (...) and you'd have to move your mouse over it to see what the date is.
Calendars would not be readable in the nether, but would continue to count time and would return to the appropriate time once you arrive back on Earth.
I think this would be better than a traditional calendar, either real or with fake Minecraft months, since knowing what date it is doesn't necessarily mean you know how much time has passed since a certain event. A timer would also impart more freedom by allowing people to assign their own significance to it.
Maybe it should be something more like a diary? On SMP, you could write in a diary what you've dont, and if you die, you drop it down, and people can read it.

That would be nice, and personally I'd love an upgrade to bookshelves so that you count store data in them and keep records, perhaps with automatic timekeeping.
But this would accomplish some of that, and seems much much simpler to implement. If diaries aren't coming, or aren't coming for a while, I'd like a calendar in the meantime. Plus, this would be portable and easy to read.
Eh...something that exists just to tell you how many days have passed I think fits better as just a part of the stat tracking that is supposedly coming eventually. Just a page with counters telling you how many days you've been in the world, how many trees you've punched, zombies killed, ect.
Now if it was something more like a diary as the guy above said, that you could actually edit and write things down in (meaning it had uses other than just saying "Day 55") I'd be down for it...

What do you think?

Using a Mob Spawner and a Stick to Master the Animal Kingdom
