I suggest adding ivy to the game. Ivy would be both a decorative plant...and a ladder!
Ivy would grow vertically from a patch of dirt. It could only exist adjacent to a stone or cobblestone wall (you'd find it on cliff faces). Once planted it will continue to grow upwards until it reaches the top of whatever stone or cobblestone barrier it's next to, without limit.
The neat thing about ivy would be that you could climb up it just like a ladder. So it'd be great for building exteriors that you want to be able to climb, when ladders would appear unsightly or out of place.
It would also provide a safe way of applying ladders to high buildings and cliffs. Just place a piece of ivy on the ground and wait a few days for it to grow.
I like it. It's simple, useful, and cool. I think there's also potential for it to become a nuisance that has to be dealt with. It could be something that spreads out in all directions and can only be permanently stopped by finding the main root system of the plant and destroying it, kinda like how water and lava can be stopped by removing the spring source.

Don't pick your nose with a pickaxe. Use a shovel.
Painterly pack has an alt for ladders that look like Ivy.

The next time an authority asks me, "What could possibly have given you such a lack of respect for the value of human life?" I will respond, "Sir, have you even BEEN to the internet?"

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
