I came up with some suggestions for the new wolf mob.
I think there should be a way to put it into guard mode. It will attack any hostile mobs within the vicinity of what location its guarding.
For example you can put wolves on guard outside your house to attack any hostiles that got you pinned inside.
If they stay at the same spot no matter how far you go then I would put wolf guards throughout my mine caverns to attack any mobs that might try to jump me from behind while I was mining
Also you should be allowed to construct dog houses using the workbench.
Make it large enough for a wolf to go inside, they recover health over time, but slower then what 1 pork chop could heal.
What would be cooler is enable you to put a sign on the front of the dog house, so you can write the wolf's name on the dog house.
My last idea if its not technologically difficult is also to give them commands to herd an animal to a specific location.
You want to kill pigs for pork or cows for leather or to get milk from them? Send out your pet to herd them to a location.
I would construct a fence and have my wolf herd them inside.
Those are just a few ideas and I may come up with more in the future.
1) I see wolves as more of a quick killing squad, not guardians of your town.
2) See above. If you took precautions while building your house, you would be able to get onto the roof, mobs wouldn't be able to get onto your roof, you could have some murder holes, and you would be able to attack through your door.
3) Maybe they could attack things that attack you first, but I'm not sure how well this would work against creepers.
4) Just make a small house for your wolves.
5) No. One reason is because you dont need to use the crafting grid to make a dog house, the other is because a auto-wolf-healing building seems a little OP in my opinion.
6) If the doghouse was added, you could just place the sign beside the doghouse, not on it.
7) You dont need to send wolves away to get some animals, you could just fence off a area and wait untill passive mobs spawn inside.
