so i was thinking that their is currently no use for the left hand right so why can't their be a use for it? now i know this has been suggested like 1'000 times but i wanted to give it my own spin.
now i currently know that their is only one hot key bar, so i was thinking that for each slot their could be 2 items. So one item in one of the slots would be for one hand and the other item in the same slot would be for the other hand.
for this formula to work their would have to be some changes in how the inventory would work. currently your inventory has 36 slots (40 if you include the armor slot's), that should not be changed.

this is how the bottom half of your inventory should look like. The red bar is you hot key for your left hand and the blue one is of the right one. how this will work is that items in you hot key's are not part of you inventory. You can have one sword in you inventory and it could be in every space in your hot key's. each pair of spaces (one on top off the other) in your hot key's are linked together. So their for "1" would be a pair of items in the 2 slots (of the hot key bar's) all the way to the right. One thing that you cannot do is put the same sword in the same slot of both hot key bars, this would not allow you to have the same item in both hands.
Using secondary items
to use you item in your left hand press and hold "Shift" yes it will make you sneak.this will make you use your left item instead of your right item. While holding shift left and right clicking will be diverted to you left hand item as if it was your normal item.
double handed weapons
bows would take up more space in the hot bars then other items because you use both hands. It takes one space in each hot bar.
That is debatable when holding two items at once. I wouldn't mind holding two blocks, but weapons would be too cheap. The controls would be altered this way too.

If you're interested in 2 items, perhaps you'd like the Offhand Slot implementation included as part of my Expanded Inventory suggestion? You can put Shields, Hand Tools, Swords, and Maps in it, but not other blocks. This would allow you to combine a sword and an Axe, or a Pickaxe with a Trowel, but not dual wield full pickaxes or shovels. It would also let you do things like have a sword always ready even as you place blocks or other things. It actually already uses your same idea for using the Sneak button to switch between which hand your left and right click activates.
