I'm one of those people (and I know there are many) that use the scroll feature of the quickbar. I WANT to use the number keys, but I find it difficult to discern anything near the middle (3-7) because of the scale. Why not label the quickbar slots 1-9?

Might help. Could be done by simply making the gui texture for your hot bar a little taller so that people can label them however they want with their texture pack. Then, instead of only numbers people could make them letters, roman numeral, symbols, whatever.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways
Use a standardized method of arranging your items on the action bar. E.g. always keep the shovel on 1, dirt on 2, torches on 3, etc, etc to whatever you fancy.

The item icon goes on top of the texture, so it's typically hard to read anything you try to put in the corner.
