I think that axes could be made more useful if they were the only way to get a full wood block. It makes sense that punching down a tree block would reduce it to smaller pieces and sawdust, while chopping it with an axe would give you a nice clean cut. Sawdust would be useless and would not drop, but would account for the loss of mass; it's just theoretical sawdust.
I suggest that punching tree blocks would give you either
A) randomly 1-4 planks or
:cool.gif: just 1 plank
Logs aren't neccessary for crafting the workbench and beginning tools. If you couldn't find coal you'd just need to make an axe first. This would make the axe very useful at the beginning of the game and onward.
Update:
Using axe on leaves drops sticks (maybe even by hand, but not by withering) and does not incur extra durability loss. Would give leaves a use after you have way too many saplings.

I see what you mean, but no. Wood planks are long rectangular pieces of wood. I don't think this is needed because it doesn't do much.

I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.
You should check on Extended 2x2 Crafting. It adds the ability to craft saplings into sticks, and sticks into wood planks, and also adds hatchets to the game, but turns off the player's ability to gather wood from logs by hand entirely.(on normal and Hard difficulties) The hatchets will gather sticks from log blocks, but not wood, so axes are still useful for gathering logs, wood planks, and charcoal.
Nah that would make wood harder to get, and I already have a problem with wood supply. And if im understanding correctly it would make it so u cant get logs any more, and I like logs.

I remember the suggestion thread you made for removing "by hand" entirely. People didn't like it. My suggestion is a middle ground that wouldn't require people to go through extra steps to make their first tools.
Edit: You just gave me an idea. Using axe on leaves drops sticks and does not incur extra durability loss.

Wood is plentiful, just plant a new tree for every one you chop down and you will still have more saplings than you know what to do with. You can still get logs using an axe, it's not that much harder and gives the axe more use.

I don't think this is necessary. It's so easy to just make a wood axe that cuts down trees faster anyway.
Lets not add sawdust unless we can think of a use. It could be a catalyst for TNT instead of sand for example but even that is only one thing and not really worth adding an entirely new item. It's not as if sand is scarce either.

I said in the OP that it was theoretical sawdust that wouldn't actually exist.
Of course it's easy to make an axe. The whole point is to make them desireable.

Axes are already desirable because they chop wood much faster than punching trees.

Not to the extent that shovels dig dirt, and that is everywhere. Trees are a once in a while sort of thing that I don't really bother getting my axe out for. I don't really consider the few seconds saved worthwhile since its not a mindless task like digging dirt (where you hold down the mouse and continue to walk forward.) Most of the time spent is walking to the tree, not gathering the logs.

Theoretical Sawdust is the best sawdust! 100% support!

The next time an authority asks me, "What could possibly have given you such a lack of respect for the value of human life?" I will respond, "Sir, have you even BEEN to the internet?"
Actually, most people objected to the concept, but once it was actually implemented, there tended to be more of a "how come I can't get wood? Oooohhh" reaction.

Hard work paying off is the best kind of fun. Axes are feeling unloved.
