When you think about it, the recipes for fence gates and fences are totally inverted of what they should be, geometry wise.
GATES should have 2 sticks sandwiched between 4 planks, and FENCES should have 2 planks surrounded by 4 sticks
because gates have two edges connected by a buckle, but fences have a pole with arms out.
I would say
switch the recipes
then increase how many each yields you slightly - 4 fences per fence, 2 fence gates per fence gate or the like.
In my honest opinion gates should require trapdoors in the crafting recipe
why? because gates have hinges, and trapdoors have hinges on them
it also puzzles me why they don't require iron for the hinge component, because most hinges in real life on high quality doors use metal for their hinges.

By that same logic, shouldn't trapdoors also require something that has hinges on them, since they have hinges? Seems like a stretch in logic to me, crafting recipes have always been a rough representation of the final product.
As for the idea itself, I don't care either way. It isn't going to severely impact anything but it also isn't really worth the effort to change it.

It doesn't matter either way, I'm fine with the current crafting recipe
these are just some possible solutions to change the crafting recipe to be more realistic,
but I understand the game is not known for realism, this isn't Ark Survival Evolved.
Iron doors are just strange imo. To keep out mobs the fence gate outshines both, wooden and iron doors.
I don't understand why the iron door needs to be powered to open. It's such a downside that i refuse to use it.
If i want a door to only open that way, i can build myself a piston door.
Even in multiplayer the iron door isn't safe unless antigrief plugin, useflags and stuff.
Guess it is meant to work like a prison door.
Perhaps it would be better if we could have a key opened variant of Iron doors, forged by a Locksmith
whoever requests a villager Locksmith to make them a key operated iron door gets given the keys by that same locksmith to open the set of iron doors they traded emeralds for, and only that person can open the door or break it down. It's not a perfect anti grief solution, but it is a start and would certainly do more to help there than gates do.
Of course you can lower privileges of other people on your server to prevent them from demolishing things, but this also ruins their ability to play the game normally too since they no longer have privileges to place or destroy blocks, even ones that the administrator or host never interacted with.
But sadly the suggested changes here to gate crafting recipe do nothing to prevent griefing from other players,
and gates already block entrance from hostile mobs.

I made a mistake in my post above. If a player could place blocks another couldn't break, it would be unfair.
It's bad enough to get trapped with obsidian, we don't need unbreakable iron doors.

My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q
The current recipes are unintuitive and their proportions are somewhat odd.
If a fence costs one log to craft (2 plank + 4 stick), and we want to give say 2-3 fence to 1 fence gate, and fence gate costs a log and a quarter (4 planks and 2 sticks), then the ratios should be slightly less even.

Not for people who don't want griefing on their servers it wouldn't
If the host doesn't want griefing on servers then this rule should be respected,
it is true you can make backup files, but really we should only have to use backup files in the case of file corruption or storage device failure.
When it comes to griefing there needs to be better controls over how players can interact with blocks
current permissions are too universal, while they do allow preventing players from activating switches, using chests or placing or destroying blocks, this also means they cannot play the game they normally would.
What I am in favour of is a border system, that is each player gets their own quadrant of the world they can freely interact with upon joining, but this also means each player spawns in a different part of the world.
This would be better than a permission system because it means the possibility of players griefing each other without hacks or exploits, is eliminated, especially if PVP is turned off. This would also mean the host would have to obey those rules to avoid double standards on that world.

I support the suggestion.
It would make it slightly easyer to memorize the crafting recipes if they where this tiny bit more logic.
I had to search gates and fences up so often not bc i barely use them. The recipes just didn't make sence to me.
In terms of balance i'd say it's even better. Fence gates should be that tiny bet more expensive then fances bc you can open / close them.
But i'm not an expert on balancing things and wood isn't a rare ressource.
From a strategical view i wouldn't even use wooden fences bc they can burn. Easy to grief with flint&steel.
Makeing fences slightly cheaper wouldn't balance out this weakspot but i think it's a good change.

but fence gates can be used to keep out hostile mobs
in terms of balance making them a tad more expensive to make than fences does make sense.
iron doors are more expensive than wooden doors, and why is this? because iron doors are more durable and zombies cannot break them down.
Following this logic, I would welcome a change that made players craft hinges out of iron for the gates in a future update,
they'd still be permanent items that never suffer wear and tear, but they'd be more costly to make than they are now.
