As the tittle suggest, the glass trap door can be used as a simple trapdoor or can be used to make a really thin wall of glass at the edge of a block. Unlike Glass Pane blocks, this block can really make things like aquariums look even better with the water looking like its right against the glass instead of there appearing to a massive space inbetween it like what is seen with a glass block and glass plane. It would simply allow the water to share the same place with the block in order to give off this nice effect.
What about the recipe? Wouldn't this be a little problem in terms of material balance or something?
You can't have the same recipe like wooden trapdoors, becouse there is already a recipe for glass panes.
For each glass varient.
If you could craft the trapdoor from panes, wouldn't it be much cheaper to only use glass trapdoors?
The recipe for panes could be changed to the arrangement of doors to make room for a recipe made of glass blocks.
Which would in return confuse many players. Personallly i could live with this. But that's just my opinion.
Problem with glass panes is they only work vertically, they cannot be placed horizontally.
I don't believe this would affect game balance at all, it would be functionally the same as every other trapdoor in the game, but with a different texture.

When it comes to crafting, maybe they could do something like make a specific type of crafting table that will allow you to craft it
Sort of like the way the Stone Cutter works for example. This new crafting table could be used to make only door types with the surprise of making glass doors as well. That way you can still make glass pane the same way and trapdoors the same way.
As for it being cheaper to make glass doors i dont think that should be of any concern as all it does is make sense. You want a block you use more glass, you want a thin wall you use less glass. Makes sense, allows for build creativity, looks good, all it does is make a net positive where everyone is happy

Could a new dynamic item be added along the lines of a trigger hook maybe a hinge allowing glass panes to be placed flat rather than vertical this could open up all blocks to be used like a trap door but you can only open it by hitting the hinge not the block, work this with a dispenser and a button and you have a hinge door secret from everyone if you don't Redstone it up it takes a verticle block and layers it flat with no movement unless you hit the hinge on one side of the block
Perhaps glass trapdoors could have a unique feature, where if the player jumps on top of them they will cause them to break, because the glass trapdoor is unable to support their weight, meaning players would need a full glass block to withstand being jumped on top of.
This could be used for some interesting parkour builds, where lava pits were made, a dungeon, or even to the Void.
You could use these to make a puzzle for players to solve, and if a player makes a mistake by jumping onto a glass trapdoor over a pit, they fall through.
So creativity is enhanced regardless of the build, you can use these to allow daylight through with a thinner but better looking block type,
But you also risk breaking these if you're not careful.
Mojang seems to be against thin wall type objects flush to doorways, maybe because it resembles other games too much. All of its wall or fence type blocks are centered and thus odd looking and non ideal for things like aquariums.

It doesn't really go against the blocky aesthetic of the game though.
You'd still have blocky terrain, in addition to lego-esque characters.
If Mojang didn't want people using non cube type items for their builds then they should've thought about this when they implemented glass panes, regular trapdoors, fences and half slabs.
they're contradicting their own philosophy of the game,
it's either they want people using non cubes for their builds or not, but you can't have your cake and eat it too, that's not how it works.
Has somebody else tried explaining this to Jeb and his team before?
It's not about cubes or not, it's about flush tiles. Doors and trapdoors should be in the middle of their respective blocks to be consistent with the current 'no walls' policy.

if trapdoors were moved to the middle of their current blocks it would grief a lot of people's builds, it's too late for Mojang to change that decision without receiving numerous complaints about it.
it'll also create less options for creativity which goes against the sandbox aspect of the game.
These absurd excuses Mojang may have made for "flush tiles" don't fly with me, sorry.

Sadly, Mojang doesn't care what most people want in general. Otherwise we'd likely have ghost miners in the game as well, for instance.

True, but with trapdoors already serving the purpose for "thin walls" to a limited extent, it makes you wonder about the real reason why they're ignoring the requests for vertical slabs, which would be more accurately called "wooden walls" if wood type.
with spruce trapdoors you can make a pseudo wooden wall, boardwalks, bridges or a thin outer skin for your huts that has a different texture compared to most other wood in the game. It's not intended for that purpose but it works just as well.
It's wasted potential, there's so many options that could be added for builds but unfortunately unless you use mods, you may never have them.

The thing is that you need like big idea making a new type of crafter because having a Level 100,000 Enchantment Table or A Super Power crafting table sounds a lot like a mod

What are you talking about? The stonecutter literally does everything the normal crafting table can do, and the fletching table does nothing at all (Yet)
Nothing about that suggest you'd need an idea bigger than this 1 for a new crafting block. The current state of minecraft suggest that its fine to add a small idea for a new crafting block like the stone cutter, and even ones that arent finished yet. This idea however is similar to the stone cutter and adds something new to the game that can be pretty useful for builders and fun with parkour.

I think what makes minecraft fun is that its simple and allows for a large amount of creativity. Its the balance of those 2 things between simplicity and complexity that makes this game shine. The order of it too! This game does an excellent job at keeping things simple at the start of the game, and allowing the player to progress in complexity at their own pace.
For example, you arent forced to turn the difficulty to hard first to start your new world for hunting trophies/achievements, you can actually start off on peaceful first, gear up or build your base up, then switch to easy, normal, or hard to get all your trophies! You also dont have redstone to make a door, stairs to make steps, or enchanted armor to fight the enderdragon, you get to decided how complex you want your experience to be,and thats whats really fun!
So like, i 100% agree with you ith the idea that verticle slabs would do nothing to harm the game. Anyone who disagrees i'd argue is likely trapped in a mixture of fear and a lack of understanding of what actually makes the game special, where fear is the weed and the lack of understandimg is its roots.
If there was anything i could tell to the developers, is to think about what makes the game special again. Its not limitations, its about the progression of removing those limitations. Its going from a dirt house to a mansion, its going from a simple lever and iron door to a automatic sugarcane farm (or a computer lol), its going from leather armor to enchanted netherite armor, and starting with nothing to slaying a dragon!!
Its that slow progression to all of those more complex things that makes players get sucked in and fall so in love with the game.

Verticle slabs fit very well into all of that
It would've been nice if we could hide redstone inside half slabs too.
this isn't a feature yet, and probably never will be, but it sure would allow for better redstone builds in a smaller space if it were made possible to place redstone underneath half slabs.
Due to the nature of trapdoors in the game, it is not practical to hide redstone underneath trapdoors either, because any activated redstone would immediately trigger a trapdoor to open or switch the other way.
Some redstone builds just look plain ugly in the game, and there isn't anything you can do about it without mods.
You can hide other things underneath trapdoors without problems though, such as water, and I have taken advantage of this feature plenty of times.
There are no glass trapdoors currently, however greenhouse builds could be made far more aesthetically pleasing if glass trapdoors were introduced, reducing the need to use glass cubes.
I don't feel this contradicts the design of the game.
The blocky aesthetic of the game would still be present on most things, such as the terrain, the characters etc.
I do think more options to round off builds would be welcome though, they don't have to be perfectly round, not even stairs or doors do that,
having glass trapdoors and even glass regular doors with iron frames would open up some more creative options for players.

My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q
