I believe that all suggestions, no matter how cool, are somewhat worthless unless they satisfy a need, or create a need for something already in-game that is currently uneeded. This thread does the second.
Decaymold would be a thin, dark green mold about as thick as snow, that would sometimes grow on blocks near water. Decaymold would not grow in light levels above 7. This mold would spread very slowly, and when it gets onto a stone block, it will slowly start breaking it down into mossy cobblestone, then stay attatched. On contact, decaymold would do 1 heart of damage.
Now where does the soul sand come in? Soul sand cannot be placed on top of the moss, but it can be placed next to it. The blocks directly around it would have the moisture sucked out of it, and therefore killing the moss. Soul sand should also be able to aborb water from the blocks directly around it. (But it shouldn't replace sponges, I want them back and better than soul sand)
Why is this a good idea? It gives a use for soul sand, and gives a hostile addition to caves that requires planning, rather than button-mashing skills.
So you're removing ANOTHER rare thing in the game? Soon there won't be anything rare. Also, this just seems like it'd be anti-fun - not fun for anyone and not serving a good purpose at all (i'm assuming you mean it spreads to all the cobble, so you need to use soul sand to traverse caves). If this isn't what you mean, i'm sorry, but it's hard to understand your post.
Also, "I believe that all suggestions, no matter how cool, are somewhat worthless unless they satisfy a need" is just plain retarded. There is no point in any part of minecraft, it's just ****ing fun. Hats? Useless, but they would be fun.
Okay, how about it doesn't turn it into mossy cobblestone, just cobblestone with the decaymoss on it. And to set a limit, how about it can only grow at most 3 blocks away from water. Does that satisfy your complaints?
