Quick and simple idea: On Minecraft.net you should be able to store save files in a File locker thingy that automatically takes any save file you wish to store, turns it into a .zip and stores it in you're personal account locker. With this you could possibly share saves privately or publicly with ease. The only problem i can see with this is if the minecraft servers would have enough memory to handle this.
What IF the minecraft server goes down? You will not be able to play the game as you don't have your save file. Your choices are to play a new world or wait to get back to your epic structure.
What if there's a catastrophic wipe on their server? You just lost hours of gameplay.

This one is a no.
It's not as a new save format at all. It's mainly for sharing files online and storing files so you can log on to another computer and download them. it wouldnt change anything with the current save format.
I think he just means synching the save games. Every time you're online, your saves get uploaded, if you play offline, when you get online your saves synch up. If you lose your data, you restore it from the online data.

Besides, when the internet is down I can still play minecraft. With this idea, I wouldn't be able to.

The problem is: If minecraft.net is offline (This never happens... NO... NEVER!!!), you can't play your saved games.
No one said anything about changing the save type.
