Here is a pretty basic new suggestion: CORN (I searched topics and couldn't find Corn)
Corn is found like you find pumpkins, sugar cane, etc.
It grows in stalks and when cut down you get two stalks back with a 25%-50% chance of getting an ear of corn, Corn can use the natural water from grass to grow so it doesnt't need a water source and grows on grass. In immature state the stalks are yellow in color and when mature and fully grown-about 4-5 minecraft days it becomes green (longer growing period than anything else). Unlike sugar cane reeds which can be used as a wall, you can walk through corn fields, but it slows you down significantly-so you can strategically place it in areas to slow down evil mods, etc....
Corn uses:
1) simply cook the corn and get a 1 heart life-no biggee, but when you need that one heart replenishment it can come in handy-dont want to waste a pork chop on 1 heart
2) grind corn into corn feed-feed to pigs to always get 2 porkchops (annoying when you really need a pork chop and pig doesnt give any).
3) corn feed to chickens and it increases the rate of spawning an egg.
4) corn feed to sheep and always get 3 wools.
4) used for future recipes.
...and a 6th use) used as a fuel source for furnaces--cheaper source of fuel so it burns twice as quickly as coal. This will allow you to save you coal for all the torches.....

Yes that is a bad idea.
I don't find the fuel source pointless-you can already use wood for fuel. This is a manufactured source for fuel and now you would be able to use your coal for more practical purposes. Plus, it would take a while to create a large corn field so it would give you more to do (in terms of farming) and these uses for corn are quite practical.
