Ok the idea of sailing has been bothering me for a while, and i have seen threads with this idea, but they are locked or dead. This would be a block like cork or driftwood, which is affected by gravity, and any block placed on top of it is affected by gravity. The catch is the cork sinks more and more with each block placed on top of it. Note that placing a cork on top of a cork would increase max load, but the ocean can only be so deep, and a floating fortress wouldn't be able to actually move anywhere, and it would become more practical to just build an island. This would make sailing and ships generally possible and customizable.
If you don't want huge battleships in your servers, build a sea barrier. Make canals and bridges limiting the size of ships. A sail system implemented along with the blocks would be all else that is required. Feedback is much appreciated!
Just wondering, how would you control these boats? I wouldn't want to push it, or have to use a boat in the center to push it.
I think the easiest and most practical way of controlling it would be to sit in a captains seat, and use wasd to control the movement. As in a game I was playing on Roblox, when you hit the command to turn left, the boat would start turning left even if you got out of the seat. You would have to get back in the seat and disable it to stop the turn. Also turn speed and movement speed should be determined by how many sails you have(and/or how large they are) and how much cork you have underwater.
I'm going to save you from the trolls here on the MC forums. This is not Roblox and no one wants it to be. Your suggestion is good, but not controlling the boats. You'd be forced to push it if anything, or have a boat in the center that controls it as said before.
Explanation Continued.
This cork idea could also see the addition of submarines, if an engine was added into the game. Because sails are such an appealing idea for me, these engines should have a slow speed. The amount of drag should only affect the engine to where if there is too much drag the engine will stop moving your craft and you would have to add another one. Your craft will move at a set speed as long as it has enough engines to move. Also, I will address weight. Since wooden ships look cool and cobblestone ships would be impractical, weight may be a good idea. Maybe only certain blocks could be placed on a floating mass? (Iron blocks would be fine considering how rare they are compared to wood)

I'm sorry, but I only adapted a way to control the movement direction of a ship. On a larger ship, getting on a boat in the center and holding a for 30 seconds is a very inconvenient way to turn 90 degrees. An optional control system, some like the original boat and some like the very nicely designed map in another sandbox game, would be a way to compromise.

As I said before, I don't see this happening. This is not like other sandbox games, and be happy to have boats. A control system would take up a lot of code and would be very glitchy, look at minecarts, you get in em and you ride them and they're extremely glitchy, even though youre not controlling them.

Yes, I will admit this is far fetched and almost impossible for a game like minecraft, but at the least, a cork block, a special type of building material to place on top of cork, a sail, and a simple control system would not be too far out there. Of course, in order for this to work, water would have to be updated to allow drag and special relations with cork, which adds to the distantness of this idea. If it were ever added, the possibilities would be endless, and sailing would be accomplished. That is what makes me think it would be worth the time. But hey, it's up to notch.
It has already been suggested in much better ways.
Give me a link or words for me to search, and I would be glad to.
Google search for Minecraft entities.
Great! This is exactly what I was looking for, I didn't think anyone else had this idea. Thank you guys for the help and ahemconstructive criticism. I don't think it's possible for me to close a thread, but i guess it will die on its own?
