Ever try and travel a far distance, or try and explore a cave, but not be able to because you don't have a torch? Sure, torches are a vital part of game play, no doubt, and they serve a great purpose so that players can't just waltz around unexplored areas with ease, but I feel that there should be SOME way to explore an area, and just do some quick reconnaissance without having to drop down twenty torches and pick them back up when you want to leave.
The solution? LANTERNS! :biggrin.gif:
Lantern Mechanic
Lanterns would function like torches that the player held. They would equip them and hold them just like a sword, and it would illuminate an area based on how good the lantern is. Lanterns wouldn't break after prolonged use, but they DO require fuel that the player would have to create to keep things balanced. Fuel would be made from the materials listed below, and would act kind of like arrows do. Fuel would be kept in the inventory, and would be expended when the lantern is lit, and would burn and illuminate an area until the fuel is all expended, kind of like how furnaces work.
If a lantern is not in the hand of a player, the lantern will not glow, but the fuel will still burn. Left clicking when a lantern is equipped will ignite the fuel, lighting the lantern. Right clicking will place a lantern down, like a torch. If a lantern is put down on the ground, it can be destroyed by Creepers, TNT, or other explosive things. Lanterns will not work underwater. Torches can also only be lit if the player is carrying a Flint and Steel.
