Okay, I read the only mobile phone app thread I found, and it wasn't what I had in mind... so here's an idea I had. If this has been suggested somewhere else, please direct me to that thread and I'll happily move this post. Sorry in advance if this is a repeat post.
I have an idea for a minecraft game on a mobile phone that is a 2D "platformer" game. Before I get into gameplay, the button layout would be like this... left side of the (touch) screen, from top to bottom, would be a jump button, a move left button, and an attack/action button. Right side of the screen would be a jump button, a move right button, and an attack/action button. The repeat buttons allow for jumping or attacking moving in either direction. In the top center of the screen is an inventory button. Press this, and the game pauses while the inventory is displayed. Press the button again to hide the inventory and return to the game.
Gameplay would begin with nothing in the inventory. The game would scroll from left to right, like a typical platformer. The player begins by moving right (the left will be blocked initially) and moving along terrain until he(she) finds a tree. The player would use the action button to harvest wood, go into the inventory, and make planks, just like the regular game. The planks would be crafted into a workbench, but the workbench would just stay in the inventory. The player uses the workbench to make a wooden pick and/or sword. All this is done by touching and dragging items on the screen to the appropriate square.
From here, the game is not like 3D minecraft in every way, but close. The point of this game is to kill mobs and make your way to a "dungeon" where you must find and destroy the mob spawner and collect items. Once the mob spawner is destroyed and the chest is opened, the player collects the new items and is transported to the next "level" at which point the player can craft a better weapon and/or tool to use.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to design an app, so I'm not really sure how this would go, but in my head, I see this as being a level oriented 8-bit platformer. There's not really much creation, so it's not exactly minecraft, but the player would be fighting minecraft mobs like creepers, zombies, spiders, and skeletons. The weapons and tools would get better and better as the levels progress, and each sublevel would be a different biome (1-1 would be forest, 1-2 would be tundra, 1-3 would be desert, etc.). By the final stages, the player should have a diamond pick, a diamond sword, a bow and arrows, and some TNT. The goal of the game would be to reach the Nether and fight through a horde of enemies to destroy a bunch of spawners and acquire some kind of final item that allows the player to "wake up" from some kind of crazy dream... not much of a story, but it's not really about that anyway.
So, what do you guys think? If you think this is totally the stupidest idea ever, please give a reason why. If you think it's mediocre, tell me what you think would make it better. If you like it, help me find a way to make it a reality. With as many people as there are playing minecraft, and more every day, I bet someone is wanting a fun app to play that's at least related to minecraft.
And just to be clear, I would NEVER suggest making an app like this without the express permission of the creators of minecraft. If for some crazy reason an app like this was actually profitable, I guarantee that Mojang would get their fair share of profit for intellectual property.
Thank you for reading this, and please let me know how you feel!
