Here is something simple. Have you ever wanted to make a flat piece of land, but hate having to shovel/mine it? Do you ever use TNT, and think how horrible, the craters make your world look? This could possibly solve these problems. Basically, it is a piece of TNT, that's explosion only goes in one direction. It would be crafted like this:
[] [] []
[] []
[] []
Possibly if they ever make obsidian half blocks, one of those would replace the obsidian.
You could also shift the place of the obsidian in the crafting grid to change the direction of it's blast.
Other Effects: Standing behind where the TNT is pointing would prevent you from taking damage. If completely covered, the blast would travel 4 blocks, as opposed to TNTs normal 3, to simulate the shock wave bouncing off the plate. The last important effect is: The TNT would remain in place after ignited.
I could see this simplifying terraforming your land. One other use I could see is in PvP SMP, people could use this as a breaching charge.
This could be a supercraftable. Implement obsidian half blocks that can be stuck on any side of the TNT. Stick the halfblocks on the sides you DON'T want the blast to travel, then ignite by powering the halfblocks with redstone or punching the TNT. After the TNT explodes, the block the obsidian halfblocks were attached to would be gone, allowing them to be picked up without mining them.
To avoid multiple shaped TNT's from destroying the obsidian halfblocks, make obsidian indestructable even when in item form.
That was the one, I was thinking the crafting recipe would be something like
[] []
Following a similar crafting recipe as TnT (I forgot how much Gunpowder is needed for TnT, so I just went with 1)
I tried to go with the teardrop shape...but you way works too, and I was wondering if the directional charges would just work vertically?

These guys make awesome art for Mods (Items, New Blocks and Mobs)
I will be using them soon

Retired StaffYeah, I think so to. But it had to do with conical shaped blasts, and the post was written in code.

Retired StaffNope, they work in all directions.
Edit: depending on how they're crafted.
