Scaled Power:
Different ways of getting power should provide more or less power. Power would be rated on a scale of 1-infinite. For each level of power added to the wire, it can power another 3 sections.
Shifts in Power:
It would be so entertaining to power machines with solar panels, lightning rods, and waterwheels, but at the moment, we can just stick a redstone torch into the ground and power stuff forever. I believe that redstone torches should last for about 2-3 minutes, then burn out and just become a stick.
New Ways of Power:
Solar panels:
Powered when in sunlight. These would provide 3 levels of power each, and could harness a lot of power if you had many of them. They would be crafted like: (Mushroom = Redstone)
Waterwheels:
Powered by flowing water. Since it is a fairly easy to harness this power, but you can't make too many of these next to eachother, it would provide 5 levels of power. Crafted like:

(Assuming weather is coming sometime soon)Lightning Rods:
These would be occaisionally struck by lighting, maybe only once every few lightning storms. Since it would be rare to have this power, it would have a power level of 10, and the power would last for about 5 minutes.

But I would just like to tell you that a redstone torch can only emit a light of 15 for a reason, for the same reason that the max light level if 15 (For Chunk Generating Reasons Or Something Of The Sort) so it can't be -Infinite, it would have to be 1-15, Other than that I like the idea of water wheels and Power and stuff like that (all tough it may impede the function of a lot of RedStono Contraptions
And why would RedStone burn out? you are going to make a lot of RedStone fanatics mad

I will be using them soon
I'm Starting to be known as a Balancer, A.K.A. I'm starting to become pessimist

The power level doesn't affect amoun of light, it affects how many wires the power source can power.
IK, I'm saying that power isn't able to travel across more than 15 blocks for the same reason that the max light level is 15 blocks, I don't know exactly why, but all I know is that It can't for some reason

I remember reading it from someones post a while ago,
I figure it has to do with chunks being 16x16x128, because 15 is one less than 16, so probably the Chunk Generating Engine

Yes! Love it! Needs a few tweaks maybe, but love the concept. Here's my idea: when you have power hooked up to a system, it all runs. Redstone torches aren't power sources, just inverters. Kinda hard to explain, here's my diagram:
(I don't actually know how to do one of these so please bear with me)

= TNT = redstone dust = redstone torch repeater pair = lever = power source
See, until that power source is online, you can flip that lever all you want, but ain't nothin' gonna happen. When the power source is on, all the redstone dust, redstone torches come to life. Then you can flip the switch and have the tnt blow up
