Heres a list of ideas I have, all involving light. These are just rough ideas, feel free to give me some feedback, be as harsh as you want. :biggrin.gif: I dont expect a single idea to be added into the game, but I'd love to here your guys' thoughts.
** 1. Lightbulbs **
The whole concept of a lightbulb is to have a light source that can be turned on/off with redstone wiring. This would be good for controlling plant growth and mob spawning. It would also be somewhat decorative, by giving your house a more modern feeling. How badass would it be to leave your house, flick off a switch, and in an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice say "lights out" ? :biggrin.gif:
Crafting recipes would go a little like this:
[] [] []
[] []
[] []
this would give 1 lightbulb.
OR
[] []
Where = Redstone dust.
This recipe would give you four, since its more expensive. An alternative to using torches could be glowstone dust, making it even more expensive. ** 2. Lanterns / Flares **
This has been suggested lots. The idea is, a light source that when you hold lights up a small area around you. Many people have their own opinions on this, but here's how I think it'd work.
Lanterns / Flares would light up the area around you. It would have a damage bar at the bottom, meaning eventually it would run out. It would only run out as you hold it. Crafting:
Lanterns
This would give you one lantern. The cobblestone could be anything reasonable, as long as you understand its a base or platform. The reason the coal is in there is because that's what its running off of. Again, an alternative to using a torch could be glowstone dust.

This would give you one flare. To active the flare, you have to right click. The coal is whats keeping it lit, the flint in steel is there because something has to ignite it. I would be happy with any variation where the flint and steel is placed. ** 3. Color Tinted Glass **
This one has been suggested A LOT. I'll tell you how it works off of what most people have been suggesting.
Color tinted glass is glass that is tinted a color. (Obviously...)
To get color tinted glass, you either craft glass with your desire of dye:
[] [] []
[] [] [] []
= Red Dye (Or any color of dye.)
Or
You would have to make colored SAND first.
[] [] []
[] [] [] []
= Sand = Any dye.
This would have the same characteristics as sand, just a different color. To get color tinted glass, you would just smelt the colored sand.
If you don't think color has anything to do with light, go take grade 6 science.
It would be a possibility that colored glass COULD be used for light bulbs and lanterns, as long as all colors match up. If you had a BLUE light bulb, it would shine blue light. Cool, right?
** 4. Shaded Glass **
This is just a rough idea of mine. Thought I'd throw it in here.
Shaded glass is glass that only lets light come in from one side. This is a bit confusing, but you WOULD be able to see everything on the other side of shaded glass as clear and bright as you would with normal glass. But say if your in a room that is completely dark, with a shaded glass window to a room that is quite bright, the room you are in would not get any brighter. Everything would look the same, (maybe a slight different texture so you can tell glass and shaded glass apart, such as being darker.) the only difference is, is that light wont pass through one or both sides.
I have no idea how this would be crafted. It would help plant growth and mob spawning. Again, just a rough idea, somebody should go further with this. ** 5. Lightning **
This doesn't have much to do with light, it just has the word light in it :3
Lightning would only be implemented if Notch added weather back to the game. ON rare occasions, the sky would be very cloudy, making outside a bit darker than usual. Rain would be falling. This indicates a lightning / thunder storm.
Effects of lightning:
- Lightning would cause a 1-4 block explosion where it strikes.
- Lightning would ignite anything flammable (leaves, wood, wool, tnt, you name it) within a 0-6 block radius.
- Lightning would power anything involving redstone, (wiring, RS torches, dispensers, etc.) within a 0-20 block radius, since lightning contains a ton of energy. It would only power for a couple seconds, preferably the same amount of time you get when using a button.
If your against the whole explosion part, think about this:
- Storms would be rare. About 1 every 10 Minecraft days.
- Only 4-6 lightning strikes would occur, (IN ANY RANDOM AREA!) but thunder sounds would be heard throughout the whole storm.
- It only destroys 1-4 blocks.
So really, the odds of your house or valuables getting struck by lightning isn't really a big deal compared to how long it will take you to repair it.
I Second. Every single one of these ideas, especially the Stained Glass one. A lot of people make cathedrals, and stained glass would just make them that much cooler.
I like the lightbulb idea, but when they shut off and you went to mine or something, monsters would spawn :Sheep:. So, maybe in any confined space with a off lightbulb, monsters would not spawn.
