In the game one has to mine diamonds tediously. I would like to make a suggestion, which will be just as tedious but make diamonds slightly more convenient to come across.
As we know from geology, carbon atoms from coal and other sources compacted with tremendous pressure and heat over time produce diamonds. My suggestion is to add a way to manufacture diamond. One would place either 8 or 16 coal into the top slot in the oven and a bucket of lava in the bottom. The coal would take the entire heating cycle of the lava to convert into a single diamond, thus limiting this technique to 1 diamond per oven per day. Also, to avoid making this process too convenient, it should only be functional with coal, and not charcoal.
I started searching for this topic elsewhere but as it is so late and I must wake up in 7 hours, I took a shortcut, so I apologize if this is a repeat.
How about, when in the 16 deepest levels of the map, right above bedrock, coal ore blocks turn into diamond ore blocks if they are touched by lava.
That way, you still have to "search" for it, since it'd be coal ore blocks, not just coal (or charcoal).
Nah, you could just pour lava onto coal to get NEAR INFINITE DIAMOND.
As for the rest of the topic, meh. I understand how this could work and how you could really limit diamond crafting, but I personally don't like the idea. Could work, though.
I still don't like the concept of making diamonds craftable, but I gotta say 64 coal smelting full-time in Lava might be the most balanced method I've seen.

u cant craft coal if u hack it in why not hak in the diamonds why ur at it
No, this is a bad idea. Grow some balls, get them from caves. Diamonds are supposed to be hard to get. If this were implemented, even at a stack of coal to one diamond, I could make a house made of diamond blocks with nothing more than the resources under my base and some patience.
It is sort of less orgasmic when you find diamonds when you could just craft them. It's minecraft, go mine the most efficient way you can.
