Random thought. I don't really like the idea of seasons in Minecraft, but some people do, or there could be a biome in which trees wilt or something, but...
This idea would also be perfect for anything involving dead trees, Autumn, winter biomes with leaf-less trees, etc.

Dead trees would be a quick source of wood, but you wouldn't get any saplings from them.
yea, someone should have made leaf blocks obey gravity a long time ago. at the most, you could make them fall slowly Notch, but seriously, nothing is weirder in minecraft than cutting half a tree up, and it doesn't "fell". Trees are designed to fall. We learned that as kids. Mine craft needs logs that fall side wises and trees that fall, ok . . . falling and collectable leaf blocks too. Tree overhaul needed - Tree types, fruit trees, wood uses, dont worry Kira im checking the search right now 'fore i think about it..

He could code it similar to the sand/gravel fall code but have it triggered by being separated from a tree.
Leaves obeying gravity isn't the problem. If you can't reach all the wood, the leaves wouldn't fall anyway, and if you can reach all the wood, the leaves decay on their own.

We don't need a rake. Rakes are for when leaves are scattered everywhere. Just scoop that pile of leaves into your inventory with a shovel. Leaves on the ground should decay after a couple minutes. Yay composting!

this is a pretty sweet idea, also surprised it has never been suggested before. it makes legitimate sense and give people easier access to building with leaves. Bravo!
i actually like this idea its logical and would expand the uses for leaves
just as long as people dont start to make suggestions like LEAF TOOLS HUDUDRUHUUUURRR
Yes, just like all the suggestions for obsidian tools, sand tool, glass tools. I mean, really people?
Still don't think a tool is required at all. Keep it at one suggestion: leaves. Simple and clean. Don't need to be suggestion new tools and stuff at the same time that aren't necessary.

You could make hedge blocks out of plain saplings too.

I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.
i dont see why so many people are against the idea of rakes
if you dont want to carry another tool well dont go looking for leafs, act as though they arent collectible
for those who think you should shovel leafs: i have never seen some on effecently do it, it would be easier to farm with a shovel then to collect leaves (personal experience)
and for those people who think it should be an upside done pick-ax that just looks wierd rakes arent flat on the bottom
they have teeth

I think that bushes should be their own plant. It would look like a leaf block, only it would have a system of branches inside of it, in the block texture. And they would spawn in different sizes.
I think the idea of leaves dropping when a tree is cut down is brilliant. Also, maybe if seasons are added, you could have leaf blocks dissapear from trees and be replaced by blocks that show the network of smaller branches and twigs, while having leaf cover on the ground.
A rake, I imagine, would be crafted like this:

Leaf blocks could also be used to make bonfires, or you could use them to hide a trap very well.
