introduction
the great obsidian debate is commonly fought over stating whether obsidian should be used or not, people are also saying that it is hard and not sharp like real obsidian making it bad for weapons while making it good for building. i hope this post is hopefully going to help settle this debate somewhat.
2 flavors of obsidian
in the world they're two variations of obsidian one being smooth while the other is sharp and spiky. I have put the obsidian that already in the game as the smooth one which means we need a way to make the other one. the way to make the second kind is have flowing lava hit still water causing it to look like a obsidian block with gouges in it.
i do not like this because you would be able to farm it easily and i know that would cause issues. so i am implementing for every 64 you mine you get 16 or 1 out of 4
destroying the sharp obsidian would give you 1 sharp obsidian shard
uses
uses for it would be used for trimming swords since it's nice and sharp. for balancing reasons this can only be done on metallic and wooden swords preventing overpowered diamond swords or mass producing effective stone swords. trimming can only be done while making the sword and would require a obsidian shard on the
blade part and it would do 25% more damage without effecting hit rate or damage rate.
making: symbols aren't working for me ill post later
replace the flint with the shards and you have a trimmed sword, it will have a purple-ish trim around the edges
i hope this can clear up some of the debate on obsidian so it can be over.
Doesn't sound simple enough for minecraft, having 2 types of the same stuff made in different ways, one of which can be used on only certain tools to trim them.
Also, this would probably be more tedious than fun, spending ages mining obsidian with only a 1/4 chance to get what you want.
Doesn't really provide a challenge, just something that takes forever to get and is still farmable.
i appreciate the feedback, and yes i do agree it is still farmable and is tedious to get, and i dont want to have to keep nerfing it to keep it decent so i might think of some other way that is less tedious and less farmable. and if it is still not good then I guess obsidian should only be used to build
I think that it shouldn't be obsidian created like that, but smooth stone, with a twist: It's dark from burns. But the dark colour will gradually fade.
I'm not sure that farmability is a problem - lots of things are farmable, and it hasn't caused the game to implode.
this is true-anyways i thought if one obsidian takes 15 seconds to get one then it should take 15 seconds of mining to get one shard by having them take 3.75 seconds each to mine each causing one shard every 15 seconds of mining since 3.75x4=15 only making it tedious. yet mining obsidian is tedious and people still do it.
Meh, I am not really fine with the whole "two obsidian" types, but if you make it similar to gravel where if you mine an obsidian block there is a change it could drop an obsidian shard instead, that would generally be better than adding a new type of obsidian to the game.
And as long as it stays the hell away from any tool ideas people have.

this is way better then my idea considering if it has the same obsidian to shard ratio as gravel to flint ratio does then all the problems would be fixed. the only thing is that i might have to boost the damage if it's to uncommon
I also do not support obsidian tools and i dont want to go anywhere near that topic.

Well... there is mossy cobblestone and normal cobblestone, where mossy cobblestone is only good for asthetics, and finding dungeons, whereas cobblestone is used for tools, and building.

P.S. i am glad you're feedback was constructive

i would appreciate it greatly if you could be more specific to why you don't like it so i can improve it or at least make note of it
