I think there should be a way to change your name on Minecraft!
I also think that if this idea is considered, there should be a limit on changing your name(like once every month or something), for the sake of less confusion or something..
Last but not least, I would definitely change my name for a bit of money(like 3-5 dollars or something).. I garauntee(not sure if I spelled that right) there are A LOT of people out there that would like to change their name, and Notch and the Minecraft players would get something good out of it. So it's a win-win situation!
You could have just used used Google to see if you spelled that correctly. You could have also used Google to actually see if this thread already existed before you duplicated it.
I would prefer nicks over name changing, our names are linked with our accounts.
Nicks would be extremely good for machinima projects. One really good video was ruined by the fact that the only player one screen was named "pissjugs".
it could act like the /nick command in the bukkit plugin called "Essentials" where if you wanted your nickname to be lol it would come up as ~lol . then if you want to see if their real name you just type in /whois .

Actually I would much prefer something like what Steam has laid out.
You have your
Account Name
Steam ID
Nickname
The one thing I don't care for on SMP is that my account name gets plastered all over. The first step in account security is not giving out your ID and the first thing SMP does is exactly that. Not to mention if I had known my login would be my Minecraft name ..... I probably would have selected another login name and my friend selected one that while is a decent login is flat out stupid when it comes to names.
The problem you run into is if all the SMP server gets is your Nickname then griefing gets way too easy.
So the SMP servers should be given your MCID(Minecraft ID) which is tied to but not your Account Name and your Nickname (MC23492-94:Zaibach). That way people can ban, black and whitelist players based on their MCID. While peoples Account Name staying out of the loop adds one more level of security to MC accounts. It also allows you to change your Nickname as much as you feel like since you can ultimately be held accountable by your MCID.
In addition SMP servers should probably be updated to keep a log of MCIDs and Aliases those MCIDs have been observed logging onto that server (with time/date stamps). So a banning a troublesome minecraft user would be as simple as /ban (nickname) or a /search (nickname) even if they had since logged out and changed their Nickname on Minecraft.net, Or for that matter even if they had logged in since then thinking that it would overwrite their old Nickname on the server. When in point of fact it would have just added that as a new Alias that their MCID could be linked to.
