My idea is that you can make a map so that you can record where you have been and find out where you are.
You would also be able to place markers on the map so that you could find out where something is.
This would make things easier to get around, although you have to have a ink pen.
[] []
[] [] [] []
In order to use the ink pen though you must have ink which you can craft using two dyes and a bowl.
[] []
[] []
[] [] = Dye = Bowl
Ink cannot be stacked in order to keep people from recording too much.
The map would record a 7x7 radius and while you are walking on a place you haven't explored the ink would begin to run out.
In order to create the map you must have 9 paper. = Paper
If you make more than one map the other map will stay blank until you enter a cavern.
When you create a map the map will appear in the upper right hand corner.
Certain blocks will appear depending on which ink you have.
You could create a multi color ink with 5 inks that you have made.
[] []
[] []
(Shapeless) These inks are required to make this ink.
With the multi color ink ever block appears on the map.
If you have more than two maps you can create a map book.
[] []
[] []
[] [] [] = Map
(Shapeless) (Does not matter how many maps)
When you create a map book you can add a new map to it at any time. [] []
[] [] [] [] = Map Book = Map
(Shapeless)
When you create a map book the map will stay in the same position, except that when you enter a place that has a map the map in the corner will be replaced with the other map.
You can create more than one map book so if you die you can get another.
Instead of placing the books into a chest you can place it into a bookshelf.

Well that's not helpful. There's a very small chance that his idea is EXACTLY like the other suggestions, and due to this he probably wanted to stated his own opinions. If he replied to the other thread stating his version on the idea it would not be seen by nearly as many people.
I like it, but i think that you should have a quill instead.

Well the reason I did not so something like this is because it would be to easy to craft, and the maps would be a very helpful item.
Of course we could use something else such as

Although I still enjoy the idea of the ink pen I posted before because a real ink pen usually is made of steel and the tip is made of gold.
Edit: Also if Notch adds oil, we could smelt oil to make plastic which we could use to make a ball point pen.

Or we could create pencils such as this

yah all these ideas are brilliant.
i think what minecraft is lacking these days is new blocks and stuff like that. they need new stuff to spice it up.
now on the pen vs quill topic. :tongue.gif: i think that the pen should be superior cuz the resources to create it are worth more and then quill should be half as worth while. now what makes the pen superior is if load with ink, the ink last twice as long as it would on a quill therefor meaning that a pen is simply a quillx2. then reason i believe that this works is simply that quills drip ink dont they ?
I like this idea, Perhaps that there could be two ink pens one with an iron tip and one with a gold tip, and the gold tipped one would make the ink last longer considering that gold is harder to find than iron.
And also perhaps you could use the pencil idea above to make temporary maps, due to the fact that pencil can be erased.
Requires way too many items to be useful on the move. If you can write on a sign with no pen and make dirt float, you should be able to write on a map without all of these different utensils needed to make it feasible.
maps are a good idea but they need to be more simple like on the chunks you have explored will show up on your map so if you have your house inside a forest it will show a forest chunk on your map with a small house on it so on your map you could place a "marker" that says this is a house or this is a cave and it will show a cave or house simble so it woudl look like desert land in the opropiate shape then forest then grassland then etc it woudl only need 9 paper to make then it would be like zoomable and you could move it multiple ways but only areas you have been too woudl show up and also a symbol for where you are this woudl trash the need for a compass since you could look at your map and find a nearby house to go to
