So one of the things I'd really love to see in Minecraft is some way to light up very large spaces without using hundreds or thousands of torches.
Sure, torches serve most purposes, but I always find it a shame when I see those epic builds with giant domes and flying arches, and the ceiling and walls are all dark. Yeah you could just put torches all over the ceiling but that kinda ruins the effect of having a giant dome.
I realize the lighting code would probably have to be rewritten since the highest possible light value is 15, but I think this would really improve the look of bigger projects in Minecraft. I wouldn't mind if it were expensive (say, one glowstone block surrounded by 4 lava buckets or something) since you wouldn't need it that often.
Ever lit a candle in the dark? With no light on at all? Notch actually gave us more lighting then we should've gotten, if he made it more realistic.
Ever punch a tree? Walk around carrying a thousand cubic meters of stone? Build a castle by yourself in a week? Run into a zombie at night?
I really don't think the realism argument applies here. Minecraft is a game. You're supposed to be able to do things you can't do in real life.
As for glowstone, it does work, but for a bigger space the amount of it you need grows exponentially and for people playing without mods that would be far too impractical. I'm thinking something that could sit in the middle of a giant hall and evenly light the entire place.

You think wrong.
