You're walking along with about 6 diamonds on you and then BAM! A Zombie comes out of nowhere and kills you.
Here's the fun part:
Now you, yes you! Become a zombie, oh and it gets better. Instead of losing your valuable items wherever you died, you get to keep them with one HUGE catch.
A gauge slowly runs out as your time as a zombie is dwindling to it's end. So what now? Well you gotta kill! YEEP!
You've gotta be the zombie you've never been before and hunt down players on the server. Killing them adds time, while if they kill you...well...your stuff is done for. For each kill, you gain health and if you manage to find some straggling wild chickens and pigs, or cows...:biggrin.gif: Then you can eat them for health.
The speed your gauge runs out is determined by how many players is on the server...the more...the faster.
BUT! Why stop with zombies, how about doing the same thing with skeletons?! You can become a bow&arrow weilding pile of bones bent on shooting your opponents all for the sake of survival. The only mob I would be against, or have disable by default would be them dreaded creepers. But if they must, then make it where a player must be within two blocks of a player before it can initiate it's ssssssss stage.
Also, think of the humiliation as you become a slime? The bigger the slime you are, depending on what armor you wore when you were killed.
Now, when the sun rises and you burn to ash, if you survived the night and kept killing then guess what? You respawn on your location as a human with all your stuff. An incentive indeed eh?
Sounds like a whole new kind of game mode. It's an interesting idea, however it might be annoying to the people who just want to play a normal non-pvp server.

Sounds alright. Just unlikely.
