Similar idea: If salamanders don't completely submerge themselves in lava, why not make them rideable?
Because they do, or will, or would, whichever tense you feel is appropriate.
Quote from dadpool42 »
I see no reason why a brand shouldn't be rideable; it does not expressly attack the player, so if we were to help it in it's fights against others...
It expressly attacks ANYTHING. Ally has no meaning to it.

for weather id like to see it raining, but the rain sprite is replaced by the fire sparks image, so it looks like it is raining fire. it could sometimes make fires on the ground, randomly.
raining dust. lots and lots of dust
You're out of luck. Rain is being replaced with Acid Rain.

i thin something like an earthquake effect ..like at random times the ground shakes and fault lines appear. Also, sinkholes and other disasters would be cool.
Read the post from this page and the previous page. The issue of earthquakes has been discussed and the conclusion is that they should NOT do excessive map damage or terrain alteration. Fissures have already been proposed as a natural biome of the Nether, theoretically having formed from an earthquake, bu will not actively form on map chunks that have already been loaded.
My idea: Small patches of certain biomes will develop a "Blight Storm". What this does is slowly drain the player's health, and items will actually degrade 4x faster than if it were in the Overworld. Plants and saplings also disappear twice as fast as it would in normal blight. If you stay to long in the area, you will be poisoned for a certain amount of after exiting, but can be quickly healed with the use of an antidote of some sort.
it'd look almost like normal air, but slightly redder/browner, and makes a small, unique noise when approached.
Basically: A worse version of normal Blight.
Would this be too hard to code? I don't know anything about coding. :tongue.gif:
Would this be too hard to code? I don't know anything about coding. :tongue.gif:
It probably wouldn't be that difficult, but the stuff you're suggesting either is already covered by Acid rain, or goes way beyond what is reasonable for weather to do, even for the Nether.
Okay, I have one last idea, after this I'll give up so just bear with me for the being. a mob has been beaten near to death ( by the player or otherwise is immaterial) and the player is given the chance to revive it with health shards. Health shards can only be found in the aether, so this would be significantly harder to do than normal. Anyways once the creature is revived, it will become nuetral towards the player. This will allow the player to continue helping it (I. E. giving it food etc.) after a while the creature will become friendly, and depending upon the mob, also ridable. Please at least give this a little thought, as it works outside of just brands.
It works really well, except that it should only work if the mob hasn't been injured by the player at all. Unfortunately it's just not what the Nether is about. We haven't even officially included the Grimhounds in the opening post yet due to the need to make the idea more comprehensive on how to AVOID making them proper allies. (actually I'm leaning towards sabertooth lions for this instead, giving the "alpha-leader" a mane would be an easy visual to do)

Frankly, Grey, it's your thread. I personally think the positives out way the negatives, and it certainly ties in some loose end nicely but, in the end, if you don't like it, it's up to you. I'll say no more on the subject.
LOL. It's sabata's thread. I'm basically the consultant for it. I probably have the lion's share of ideas at this point, but Sabata is still generally providing the direction of the ideas.
I suppose in some ways it might be like the Producer-Director relationship. I'm the one doing the main interaction with the ideas, and getting things to work so it looks good, but sabata provided the main push of "this needs to exist" and ultimately has final say on what gets nixed or not.
Maybe... lava-rain? It'd be a bit more rare than rain in the Overworld and would hurt you by half a heart every 5 seconds? Maybe it could also catch regular wood on fire, but not Grimwood or anything else. I know nothing about coding, sooo, not sure how hard it would be to implement. :3

Slight modification: Chunks of molten lava fall out of the sky. If they hit, 2 hearts damage. Anything they hit that's flammable gets set on fire. However, it is possible to avoid them. (There won't be too many falling at once.)

Acid Rain is what we're more strongly behind, lava rain would be redundant. and for blocks falling, Ash Thermals has this aspect covered in a much more unique manner.

portal block (instantly move between any 2 portal blocks in the same dimension)
No. The whole point of the Nether is to act as a dangerous, but faster method of traveling on the overworld. Being able to create portals in either zone that connect directly to each other would completely undermine that entire foundation that is the entire reason for Nether's existence in the first place.
sanctuary block (mobs can not come within 15 blocks)
I've been toying with the idea that setting up Mushraves in specific patterns would accomplish this to certain degree, not so much that they couldn't wander into it, but that they wouldn't spawn inside of that range. If you had one chase you from outside the range to inside, that's on your head.
The bonus is that it would allow you to use each of the different colors to keep different types of mobs from spawning, so one color prevents hostiles, useful in the Nether where Mobs aren't affected by light levels, and another color could prevent neutral mobs, and the final could prevent friendlies, which could be useful even in the overworld, since friendlies are MORE likely to spawn around light at night.
Wouldn't you sort of want friendliest to spawn? Even in over world? Keep in mind that sheep, pigs etc. are usually considered nuetral, andnthat wolves are the only real friendlies.

Passive is actually more accurate, and some people find them annoying when they are growing crops, and need the light to make sure the crops grow but down want animals spawning in that area to trample the crops
Alright, I see it has it's uses, so I'll leave it alone. But upon fully reading the OP, there is something totally unrelated that I must complain about; soul-glass tools? C'mon, even for the Nether, it's a little far fetched, glass isn't exactly the most durable material. Unless there is some special propery soul-glass has over regular glass... Actually, maybe I should reread that part...

i am not shure you understood.
no movement between neather and main world by portal bloks.
very expensive in nether materials. (so you have to go to the neather and serch for a while for each block)
your complaint is that it is to safe and fast.
here are some changes that might improve it in your mind.
add a chance of failure where you appere at a random point between the blocks.
this would be dangerous becous you could apper in a wall, over a 25 block drop (fatal), of in lava.
this chance could increase exponentialy with distance.
10 block distance = 1% chance then double for every 10 blocks. (or some other number)
then the maximum distance would be ~66 blocks with a ~%90 chance of failure.
not rilly worth it in overworld but in nether that is about 8 chunks (overworld space)
slightly shorter jumps would be MUCH safer.

Glass can actually be very strong, it's called Tempered Glass It wouldn't be at all unreasonable for a sand that has special properties to naturally exhibit properties of tempered glass. Also, it's not like this has diamond level durability. It has a mining strength/damage of iron, but only a durability of stone(or double that in the nether)

You're the one who isn't understanding: the Nether itself, the ENTIRE REASON NOTCH ADDED IT TO BEGIN WITH, is meant to make traveling from point A on the overworld to point B on the overworld faster, but at the cost of being more dangerous. Making ANY type of portal that instantly teleports the player to another portal someplace else would completely negate that feature. It doesn't matter if you're making it expensive. You are saying "add something to the nether that makes it so I don't have any reason to go to back to the nether"
The changes you're talking about render it pointless. We already have minecart booster tracks, build a portal on the overworld, and in the Nether, build a tunnel and minecart tracks with booster tracks to take you through the portal faster and safer.
And all of that is still not even touching on the fact that what you're asking for wouldn't be covered at ALL by the materials already present in this mod, so this would require some completely new ore of some sort that serves absolutely no purpose at all except making these game breaking portals.
First off. "Not even the slightest chance. A) why would you build a crafting bench out of something that makes it hard to see? :cool.gif: how would that make your crafting grid bigger? and C) a larger crafting grid is USELESS. I have stated this many times and will continue to state this: ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING that has any business being in Minecraft can be crafted on the 3x3 grid that already exists. Larger grids are just for people who are sloppy and uncreative about coming up with recipes for things." man, can you back off a bit? It was just a idea... You don't have to be so harsh.
Second, I love the tamable salamander idea, but on the riding... Why can't you just ride the salamander.
