yo sorry for being off topic but I had to do this...
you should be able to make gloomwood beds that will work like normal beds but they make you skip the day instead of the night. just my two cents, didn't want to make a new thread for this.
Ok, firstly, bang on about the instant ignition; I meant to clarify that it would only arise from non-flowing lava sources, not flow blocks or those connected to them. Since, as far as I know, it is quite rare for source blocks to set blocks on fire (isn't it mainly flow blocks that do this?), this would cease to be an issue. And as I said, lava would not ignite it. I realise this isn't very logical, but what else is there to do? As an idea, if acid as a liquid block is implemented, maybe it could be fumes rather than smog, coming off the acid?
Please read back through the opening post, particularly the section on Lava Updates.
Secondly, the flammability idea was the whole idea that set it apart from acid rain, as I said.
It sets it apart from Acid rain, but doesn't really set it apart from all the other flammable substances, like Midas Tears (the flow blocks can catch on fire) or even Mobs like the Brand. Furthermore, Gases would be an entirely new game mechanic, with it's own set of rules that I'm not really comfortable with adding. Even clouds aren't something that can be interacted with in current Minecraft.
Well, for a start, I was never entirely sure how the airship thing was going to work. I did ask on the Aether thread, but I think you missed it. So I'm working on the Modular Boat thread principles, with gas bladders as part of the balloon.
Pretty much.
Anyway, at no point did I say that the fuel necessity should be removed; after all, this is a gas that normally sinks below the air, so it's going to have to be heated a lot.
And that's the key problem. Gas bladders are called GAS bladders specifically with the idea that Aerwhales and Ghasts would use LIGHTER-than-air gases in order to float, and that the player would be using those gases to float directly, not just filling up the bladder with hot air.
Also, you're assuming there can be only one way to make a hot air balloon. Perhaps a non-bladder-using airship is much less fuel effective than a bladder-using one? And perhaps the non-bl. airships are more likely to catch fire than bl.-using ones, for, as you said, the bladder itself must be pretty damn fireproof, particularly if you work on the assumption that it's protecting highly flammable gas as I'm suggesting. Overall, I'm beginning to get a Hot-Air Balloon vs Zeppelin feeling here.
I'm not really sure where you get the idea that I'M the one who is stuck on hot air balloons only working one way. I was specifically proposing Gas Bladders AS a zeplin style lift provider that wouldn't need a heat source, or at LEAST not much of one.
Balloons: Made without gas-bladders, cheap, dirty, resource expensive and difficult to make large structures out of. When they catch on fire (which is quite often) then descend slowly to the ground. Require common renewing, but crashing one is relatively safe.
Zeppelin: Made with Gas-bladders, creating huge, more resource effective and manoeuvrable structures. They rarely catch on fire, but when they do, they explode dramatically in mid-air, so chances of survival are small. Are almost completely safe when not manoeuvring, so you can use them in the end game stages to create massive, safe, immobile bases. They are much more expensive and dangerous to procure resources for, however.
I think that would work quite nicely.
No it wont, because you're getting game balance completely reversed. The hot air balloons are easier to gather the materials for, so they require more effort to run and are more dangerous. The Ghast Bladders are the hard ones to gather, so they should be EASIER and LESS dangerous to use, not even harder.
Grey, I can clearly see from your reply that you've already gone down the 'Demon Overlord' approach. I'm trying to go somewhere completely different, a kind of 'exoskeleton' look, rather than an armour one. Think the Moria orcs from lord of the rings; they look like scuttling cockroaches.
That is the concept I'm trying to achieve. I'm sorry if I'm not being very clear on this point.
*facepalms* I don't care what you want to go for. THIS is the material that the New Nether has to work with for "bone" armor:
It would make sense for that to be crafted into something that looks like a black wearable skeleton, but NOT a freaking insect carapace. Cliche or not, it just makes sense. It would still end up looking like the player has some sort of exoskeleton though, so I'm really not sure what your issue is here. Either way, it's just not something that would make sense to have any special abilities, or even a particularly strong defense due to nature and general lack of rarity to the material, so it's very unlikely to include this as an option even if it would look cool.

I was about to brush that off as a stupid idea, but that actually might not be that bad. With the gloomwood generating shadows, it makes sense that they would allow the player to treat even high noon as being like night. Perhaps it should require Asbestoskin instead of cloth? (would it makes sense for Asbestoskin to insulate both against heat AND cold? It might not be a bad idea) The tradeoff could be that Monsters would ALWAYS have a chance of appearing at the bottom of your bed.
I also like the idea of a Asbestoskin and Gloomwood bed. It would be a nice addition and would be highly useful for monster hunters like myself as I live in a desert. It would also be kind of funny if the monster that came from the bed was an angry zombiepigman.
I just thought of this but the terrain png would need to be expanded if the Aether and New Nether were implemented.
i agree and disagree. the nether is a baren wasteland right now, but with all that itl be to lively. about 1/2 or 1/3 of that stuff in there would be fine
hmm... how about with gloomwood, you could make a gloombench, wich is 6/6 instead of 3/3. it would add more recepies, so now you could craft amazing objects. (like banners, flags, tables, master beds etc) also, with gloomwood, you could make cursed weapons, which either are slow, but are powerful and durable, or quick but, durable and weak. you couldnt control which one you are getting, but thats why there cursed. However, there is a small chance you could get a powerful, quick, and durable tool. also, wands they could be crafted with wood poles and diamonds to be like long ranged flint and steel.and maybe glowmite? dinamite but glowstone instead of sulpher, and soulsand instead of sand. They could be more powerful, but have a detonater made with iron and redstone. Thanks for bearing with me, i know thats a bit much.
I like the new salamander and troll mobs, but the rest of it seems like it would make the Nether too... busy? I think the fact thats its dark and creepy and you never know when you'll run into pigmen is the best part of it.
Absolutely amazing! I was a bit discouraged by some of your ideas at first, but after reading the post you seem to have a way to counteract every downside leaving only good ideas I LIKE IT!

No. Random Monsters from whatever makes sense for the area you're in. The bed is just made from Nether materials, it's not made of portal blocks or anything. As for enemies in the Nether, you'd be more likely to get a glutton or a Brand or something. In some ways it could be a very effective strategy, since you could catch those mobs in close quarters. Unfortunately you could also end up with a Troll or a Ghast or something.
Also, the Eternal Bed should never move your spawn (then again, I don't think the regular bed should either)
I just thought of this but the terrain png would need to be expanded if the Aether and New Nether were implemented.
There are already mods that do that, and Notch needs to expands the Terrain and Item.pngs for the purpose of supporting mods properly (Extended 2x2 alone already pushes the item IDs beyond its limits)

You both keep on treating it like all the mobs getting added would be added on top of regular spawn rates and at the same amount. All spawn rates can(and SHOULD) be dropped down to ensure that it doesn't get too crowded, otherwise it would be way too likely for enemies to be battling each other and never have a chance for you to fight them.
If anything it would lower your chances of running into Pigmen, and be far more likely to get one of the more openly aggresive mobs instead.

Not even the slightest chance. A) why would you build a crafting bench out of something that makes it hard to see? :cool.gif: how would that make your crafting grid bigger? and C) a larger crafting grid is USELESS. I have stated this many times and will continue to state this: ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING that has any business being in Minecraft can be crafted on the 3x3 grid that already exists. Larger grids are just for people who are sloppy and uncreative about coming up with recipes for things.

I like everything except the new plants (and mudkipz P:). IMO nether has enough wildlife with mushrooms and any trees/plantation would ruin it. Also salamander looks too bright-colored, maybe a red or brown color would match better.
As for weather, heat waves that makes %50~ of the netherrack burning would be interesting to see. You wander around, then hear 100's of creepers hissing and see the wave of flames coming closer at you.
Or maybe earthquakes that create random tiny explosions (0.2 to 1.0 scaled) and make more lava fall from ceiling of nether (and in some cases, permanent lava streams falling through ceiling to deep holes to prevent lava floods, perhaps?)
And my personal favourite, a "blister" that makes all redstone currents on loaded chunks go on/off REALLY randomly (so random that one of two connected redstone wires could be power with a full charge of 15 power level while other is completely uncharged P:) and make maximum light level 10 AND reduce light level everywhere by 2 (light level reduction is applied before maximum light level)
Thats what ive got for now...
(I also got some spooky event ideas, gimme heads up if you are ready for a letter wall of text )

First of all.... this whole idea is probably the best and most epic things I've ever seen. I have two suggestions; make the brand rideable and make the salamnder trainable. The brand being ridable would greatly improve gameplay because of the multi-surface transportation, and cool attack styles. The salamander because it is simply a useful helper.

A) The brand will set itself on fire just to be able to hurt you better. I highly doubt it will take at all kindly to being ridden
:cool.gif: I see no possible useful function Salamanders could serve.

Keep in mind these are not your typical plants. The Gloomtrees suck light out of the surrounding air, and Fright Bulbs will explode if you step on their leaves. Mushraves glow, and may or may not also be poisonous.
Also salamander looks too bright-colored, maybe a red or brown color would match better.
Lava is bright too, it makes sense that something that swims in lava would be colored to match. Also, you're seeing it in full lighting, not in the lighting of the Nether.

It's a thought. all you'd have to do is set a bunch of netherrack on fire in a row and the Netherrack itself would handle the rest.

too destructive. Read back a few posts and you'll see what teh current thoughts are on Earthquakes.

Redstone isn't natural to the Nether. It's a thought, but it seems kinda weird that you'd have something like that which would only be observable by bringing it in. Still, it could be rather neat if there was a nether effect that could randomly activate anything that can be activated by redstone, unless it was placed on top of Soul Sand or something.

Similar idea: If salamanders don't completely submerge themselves in lava, why not make them rideable? It would be about as useful as riding a pig, albeit allowing you to traverse lava, and maybe there could be an achievement related to it?
Salamanders could gain speed if ridden over time (like, after riding it for about 20 seconds, it goes faster than the player, useful for traveling large open stretches when there are ghasts above you), and they could possibly shed their skin every couple of days when tamed?
Or perhaps a "fragile" skin, which, when crafted with either one above the other or 9 in the crafting grid, would make Asbestoskin. Depends on how overpowered or underpowered you think it is.
I see no reason why a brand shouldn't be rideable; it does not expressly attack the player, so if we were to help it in it's fights against others... I think it would be possible, espesially since these things seem pretty intelligent, so they should be able to recognize an ally when they see one. Besides, riding such a creatures entails a whole new game mechanic. Of course you'd need a very specialized saddle- perhaps one made of Asbestoskin.
for weather id like to see it raining, but the rain sprite is replaced by the fire sparks image, so it looks like it is raining fire. it could sometimes make fires on the ground, randomly.
i thin something like an earthquake effect ..like at random times the ground shakes and fault lines appear. Also, sinkholes and other disasters would be cool.
