If the Nether were to change, I would like it to seem familiar and be without things like new ores and such. Maybe a few new blocks... Mobs are a maybe...
I would kind of like new ores and mobs, but not overboard with it. Adding tool tiers to the Nether and new liquids and what not would be overwhelming, although nice.

Was that supposed to mean you want credit, or that you're offended that I'm using it? (I know you made the image)
Cause that's the image I wanted to use for the redone Sapropype (which basically only retained it's aesthetics).
Also, very little of what Grey quotes are "awsum! needs it! 4 U!" posts.
Seeing as it's only two people behind the thread (usually one) but tons of people asking questions or needing to be corrected, it's either one long post or several shorter posts with exactly the same content.
Some nice replies there, I'm getting a better idea of what's being proposed. Thanks.
A couple of points though:
While you might not be keen on additional tiers of tools/armour in the Nether, I'm sure plenty of other players are. Either way, rather than additional tiers, they could just have alternative damage vs durability. Personally I feel there's too big a gap between iron and diamond and while nothing needs to be any better than diamond, the aesthetics sure would make SMP a more pleasantly diverse place to play (did I mention I'm bored of diamond?). That being said, having the additional functions is a good idea.
The act of turning a cart into a helmet is just mind-boggling. "I rowed into a river of tears and my boat turned into a gold helmet." o_0 It's just a lot more consistent to make a gold minecart for this purpose. Much like a painting, it doesn't need a use. If it must have a use, I'm sure either of you can come up with one. In any case, it makes more sense than turning it into a helmet. The construction might be similar, but the scale is all wrong. Surely you must see that (mind you, zombies dropping feathers? o_0).
GreyAcumen, can you please not quote every reply you see in a thread? Not to be mean or anything but most of the things others said could be passed by and you can reply to others with constructive criticism. Scrolling by giant amounts of quoted text that don't really generate discussion can get annoying if it's just people dropping by going "this wood be so kuul omg" or "this is what i like instead".
If you check back at the beginning of my previous post, I'm sure you'll find it far more suitable now.

That's because th current tier system is static; once you get diamond, there's no real reason not to use diamond. The only reason to switch to a different material right now is for the purpose of conservation of material.
Adding a tier between iron and diamond wont change that, but what will make the diamond and all the other tools interesting to use is when they are dynamic; most of the time diamond will be the best tool to use, but In the Nether, Blood Gem will be the best; and in specific situations, Netherraze will actually be the best, and in even rarer cases, GOLD might even be the best (part of the properties I had proposed for Echollow, which Sabata cut from the Nether)
This issue of tier dynamics is the same philosophy I used for my Magic Furnace suggestion, which Midas Tears, and Zombie Pigmen having different tools that can be dropped, indirectly support; The Enchanted Gold Tools still have all their weaknesses in damage and ability, (and theoretically, weaknesses in speed, before Notch updated them to be faster than diamond on specific blocks) but gain abilities that go completely outside of the "protects better/mines faster/does more damage" route.
The act of turning a cart into a helmet is just mind-boggling. "I rowed into a river of tears and my boat turned into a gold helmet." o_0 It's just a lot more consistent to make a gold minecart for this purpose.
No. It's plenty consistent as is. When Iron or gold are involved, I'm pretty much only concerned about the numbers on ingots involved.
I was even considering having the bucket turn into a gold helmet too, even though the ingot exchange would be wrong, but then I realized that picking up Midas Tears in an Iron Bucket WOULD be illogical unless it also turned into a Gold Helmet in that situation, in which case, no one would be able to pick up midas tears at all. That's the only reason for the existence of the Gold Bucket.
Much like a painting, it doesn't need a use. If it must have a use, I'm sure either of you can come up with one.
Except all a Minecart does is move over tracks. There are only so many ways that you can limit that. Otherwise running a minecart into Midas Tears would be purely aesthetic and not actually a problem.
In any case, it makes more sense than turning it into a helmet. The construction might be similar, but the scale is all wrong. Surely you must see that (mind you, zombies dropping feathers? o_0).
As you pointed out, Game logic does not equal being REALISTIC, the important thing is the presence of logic, people will figure it out, and in the meantime will go "Crap, don't ever let your minecart steer into Midas Tears. It will ruin you if you're in lava an still be annoying otherwise."
Also, If you look at the size of the helmet that you see on the Player's head, it's really not THAT much of a difference in scale.
Simply too big and complicated, I like the nether now, you can get glowstone, soul sand, netherrack and mushrooms there, but the ghasts make it a little hard to get.
The goodness of the Nether lies in it's simplicity, if anything Notch should focus on the overworld.
I like this idea, the nether, while being hell, still needs a reason to go there. Unless you are in dire need of soul sand or netherack, there is no point whatsoever right now.

The goodness of the Nether lies in it's simplicity, if anything Notch should focus on the overworld.
I liked the nether too, for 5 minutes. Then I realized that I had netherrack coming out my ears, soul sand had absolutely no practical application that would benefit me, I could grow crops for bread or gather pork and grill it a LOT easier than risking the Nether for a couple dumb mushrooms, and instead of glowstone, it was a lot easier just to hunt down some pumpkins to make a jackolantern which I could pick back up after I placed it without only getting 1/9th of a jackolantern back, it's easier to kill a creeper with a couple arrows for Gunpowder than it is to kill a ghast that wont come closer than shooting at you from across the entire map and will end up with its drops falling in lava anyway, and a piece of grilling pork is so completely not worth having an entire butfu cluster of zombie pigmen coming after you.
And as far as challenge goes, it's not really that hard to keep moving to avoid Ghasts bombing you, and zombie pigs wont attack unless provoked, so as long as you select your battles carefully, there's not much danger.
So to sum up, whether gathering materials or looking for a challenge, there is no reason to go to the Nether without the changes and additions this thread suggests.
I guess I can't really say what colors would look best in the nether without looking at it, but the reddish hue of the Nether is an illusion. The Netherrack is red, and the mist is red, but there is no actual red lighting, meaning that blue looks like blue.
Also, Whether or not it is light spectrum or mixed whatsit is irrelevant: Why does it have to be additive color spectrum? Can't we just get "glow powder" from the mushrooms or something? This would allow Notch to be more flexible about which color mushrooms he thinks fit the Nether theme better.
Hey there, Grey. This, like the Aether, is a pretty darned good suggestion! Although, I see what people mean about the Mushraves. They sorta just make me think of parties or something, I dunno. You could always change the name of another 'netherobject' to something else, then call them Nethershrooms. Which is to say, I have an idea.
That Nether... dangit I don't remember the name. OH WELL. Netherrave? I dunno. Something like that. Yeah I think I'll just call it Netherrave. Anyway... I think a suitable name for it would be Grimstone; yes, grim and also stone. But wait! Doesn't that sound a bit like Brimstone, something often associated with Hell and demons and stuff? Yes, yes it does. That is the only reason I suggested the name. Just make it more... stone-like, rather than dirt like, and... yeah. I dunno. Just throwing the idea out there. (ahh don't kill me for bad suggestions)
But yeah, this is, at least in my opinion, much better than the previous thread. Good job, have an internet text cookie, because I couldn't afford an internet picture cookie (I am SO LAZY).
How about no? This is horrifically ripped off of another Nether Update thread, which is a lot more thought out and supported.

This is not a 'ripoff'. At all. First off, people can make suggestions about the Nether all they want. They can pretty darn HUGE suggestions about the Nether all they want. Also, Grey knows about the topic and from what I hear disapproves of it. I think. I've seen him talk about a few times, so. Anyway, this is his take on it, and I honestly prefer this one. I mean, do you really expect the... actually, I'm not parcticularly sure who contributed to the Aether most. But, uh. Do you really expect someone who helped create the Aether (which according to polls has I think more than two thousand people begging Notch to add it (myself included!)) to make some kinda ripoff? He even gave Scarecrowman or whatever credit for pretty much the only thing that could have been concievably taken from that thread. Augh. Please actually take some time and READ the first post, thank you. (Also this one is way more thought out, what are you thinking. This part in bold tells me that you didn't actually read at least one of these two Nether Suggestions properly, possibly both. "Crap, don't ever let your minecart steer into Midas Tears. It will ruin you if you're in lava an still be annoying otherwise."
How can one be in Midas Tears AND lava at the same time? Are you suggesting two flowing blocks are going to be 'mixing' together? Won't that create problems/bugs? Either way, I'm still not a fan of Midas Tears; I think its going a little too far. Turning stuff into gold is fair enough, but the whole destuction/burning bit is going to create too many problems. In fact you could probably remove Midas Tears altogether and still have a very attractive concept overall.
So the bucket turns into a gold bucket, but the minecart turns into a gold helmet? MECHANICALLY this works, but REALISTICALLY it doesn't. (you must be a developer :tongue.gif:) There is no harm in creating a gold minecart that functions exactly the same as an iron one.
Not everything needs to be given a specific function. Yes it's ideal to give everything a purpose, but immersion and aesthetics work just fine on their own. If you want the danger of steering your cart into lava, then have gold minecarts melt on impact. No one could argue with that.
I think my decision on this is that it leaves me wanting... more.
Some kind of dye to gain from the "mushraves" would be nice, maybe some more minerals,
more tools to make with those minerals, and another ghost-like mob.
Unnamed Ghost Mob
-can only be harmed by blood tools (or maybe raze tools I don't know)
-can fly
-can move through blocks
-upon sighting the player, the ghost will follow the player
-speed is more than the player's
-upon touching the player, the player will be hurt every half second for 0.5 (or maybe 1) heart
-health is 3 hits from a blood (or maybe raze) sword (don't know how many hearts that is, but that seems fair)
what do ya think?

[anchor=Soul]"Sticky" Soul Sand -[/anchor]
Mobs -
"Sticky" Soul Sand replaces the current Soul Sand, being generated in the same places, and building on its features. Players and Mobs will still have their movement speed reduced while walking on it by the same amount, but the player and other mobs will also no longer be able to Jump while on top of a Soul Sand block. The player may be able to climb up the sides of Soul Sand like ladder blocks, but at half the speed of ladders, and if so, mobs will also be able to climb up these blocks the way spiders can for any block.
Liquids -
Liquids will flow one less block as far when flowing over a Soul Sand block. This effect is cumulative for each block of Soul Sand the liquid flows over.
Sand/Gravel -
Furthermore when a sand or gravel block is placed against a Soul Sand block, the sand or gravel will act as if supported, even if above empty air. If the Soul Sand is removed afterward, the sand and gravel that were placed next to it will not fall unless they, or the block they are on top of, are broken. This will allow the player to build cascading sand/gravel traps more easily.
Tools -
Gold, Iron, and Diamond Shovels can mine Soul Sand and the same rate as regular sand. Wood and Stone Shovels mine Soul Sand at the same rate as Diamond Picks do Obsidian. Fists and other tools can break, but cannot mine.
Soul Sand can be tilled, and is the only way to grow new Gloomwood, but only by a Netherraze Hoe.
Corruption -
In the Nether, Sand or Dirt can be corrupted by Soul Sand the same way Cobblestone and Smooth stone can be corrupted by Netherrack. Likewise in the Overworld, Grass blocks can "corrupt" Soul Sand to become a regular Dirt Block (with grass) A radius around an active portal equal to the twice the number of blocks it is tall will be immune to Corruption. This effect extends in a capsule shape around the Portal, both in the Nether and the Overworld
I dislike the section on Sand/Gravel for one reason: once the Soul Sand is removed, the effect should immediately end. Why do i say that?
Primarily, because it's intuitive. If the Sand and Gravel is sticking to the Soul Sand, and you take it away, then the Sand/Gravel will fall. It makes sense.
Secondary to that, consider the functionality of Water and Lava. If something near, but not adjacent to, the liquid changes that might alter it's course, nothing happens. Instead it notices only when an adjacent block is updated. The Soul Sand will always be adjacent to the block it affects, so taking it away profides that update, immediately allowing the Sand/Gravel to "look around" and return to normal physics. This seems to fit with the current coding practice. (I haven't actually looked at the code, so feel free to correct me if you have.)
I don't really think we need to artificially make new ways to help people be creative.
List tags are malformed.
Only one problem with it really.... Blood Diamonds = Rubies. So... what happens when we get them put into the game then? x_x
A) What makes you so sure Rubies ever will get put in the game?
:cool.gif: Blood Gems are not Rubies, hence why you cannot get them by mining.

How can one be in Midas Tears AND lava at the same time? Are you suggesting two flowing blocks are going to be 'mixing' together? Won't that create problems/bugs?
I don't see any issues, since source block for Midas Tears doesn't burn, but the flow does, being surrounded by lava just wont give it a chance to flow anywhere, so it'll be a single block surrounded by lava, possibly very hard to see and easy to mistakenly float across in your netheraft.
Turning stuff into gold is fair enough, but the whole destuction/burning bit is going to create too many problems. In fact you could probably remove Midas Tears altogether and still have a very attractive concept overall.
What are you talking about? Only the ability to turn Items to gold extends to the player's quickbar, it only destroys your items if you drop an item that can't be turned into gold into it. (and wont destroy gold items at all) That part isn't much different than lava, so what problems is it gong to bring other than the ones it is SUPPOSED to cause for the player?
So the bucket turns into a gold bucket, but the minecart turns into a gold helmet? MECHANICALLY this works, but REALISTICALLY it doesn't. (you must be a developer :tongue.gif:) There is no harm in creating a gold minecart that functions exactly the same as an iron one.
Not everything needs to be given a specific function. Yes it's ideal to give everything a purpose, but immersion and aesthetics work just fine on their own. If you want the danger of steering your cart into lava, then have gold minecarts melt on impact. No one could argue with that.
Minecraft doesn't NEED to be realistic, logical yes, but not realistic. There are 3 ways that a minecart might run into Midas Tears:
1) Using the minecart as a lava boat, and running into a patch of Midas Tears. This is the most likely situation, and in it the gold minecart would melt in the lava, so not only is it useless, its appearance would be all of 2 seconds.
2) Using the minecart as a minecart, and somehow manages to touch Midas Tears. Minecart turns into a gold minecart and has absolutely no negative repercussions.
3) In the player's quickbar when the player touches Midas Tears. Again, no negative repercussions.
So in the most likely scenario, the golden minecart barely even makes an appearance and might as well be a golden helmet for all the difference it would make, and in the other scenarios, there's no negative effects. It literally has no point except to make people question why they can't just make minecarts out of gold directly so they don't have to waste iron building them.
The gold bucket has a purpose, it makes it in. The gold minecart doesn't, and has an equivalent item that it can change into instead, so it doesn't make it in. I'm sure there will be plenty of people that go "wait, why a helmet?" but then they'll eventually put 2 and 2 together and notice the similarity of the crafting recipe.

Maybe. The one cool thing I did notice from the old Nether thread was the ability to make glow-in-the-dark sheep. Rather than needing to create a dye, I think it would be easier just to let the Rave Gels be used directly as a dye.
maybe some more minerals, more tools to make with those minerals,
Not a chance in... Nether. The old Nether update suggestion already had far too many useless tools that brought nothing to the game.

not bad, though my particular philosophy is that Gold Tools should ALWAYS be able to strike insubstantial mobs and blocks. Rather than the Raze Tools actually doing direct damage, just have that rely on their standard chance of being able to set mobs on fire. Also, if it can move through blocks unhindered, it doesn't need to be faster than the player, merely AS fast.
If it can directly injure the player, it would need to be something that only appeared if you HAD the gold or netherraze tools needed to injure it, otherwise that would be ridiculous to not to have any way at all of stopping something like that just because you happened to not have the exact specific tools.
Though that COULD be addressed by having all Zombie Pigmen attack Ghosts on sight. If you couldn't fight back, you'd only need to lead it into a group of Zombie Pigmen. They'd be able to kill it with their gold tools. Of course, it needs some proper Mockup artwork (none of this pacman ghost bullcrap either) to show that it can look both appropriately dangerous and "ghosty" and yet still fit the blocky artstyle of minecraft.

Residue from the Sticky Soul Sand allows it to stay up even after the soul sand has been removed. That's the explanation I'm sticking to. No pun intended.

Indeed, that is an accurate analysis of the way blocks function. However the purpose of Soul Sand could be to tell the blocks next to it "don't check for updates until AFTER the soul sand has already been removed"
I don't really think we need to artificially make new ways to help people be creative.
I do. I find it incredibly frustrating that Sand and gravel have this unique ability to cause cascades, and yet there's no way for the player to take advantage of that, and with Sandstone, it's even LESS likely to find places where sand can cascade anymore.
This and the Aether are my two favorite ideas ever. Notch should totally add this and the Aether to make a total of three awesome worlds to travel. The only things I don't like are the halved durability and lasso, (too complex).
I would kind of like new ores and mobs, but not overboard with it. Adding tool tiers to the Nether and new liquids and what not would be overwhelming, although nice.

This part in bold tells me that you didn't actually read at least one of these two Nether Suggestions properly, possibly both. Making art mockups of recipes for materials that don't even have a proper use, and suggesting mobs with barely a single full paragraph of description each, do not qualify in my book as "more thought out"
Also, I'm going to use Regifishy as the new posterchild for this thread;
What were you saying about better thought out and supported now?

(you must be a developer :tongue.gif:)
There is no harm in creating a gold minecart that functions exactly the same as an iron one.
Not everything needs to be given a specific function. Yes it's ideal to give everything a purpose, but immersion and aesthetics work just fine on their own. If you want the danger of steering your cart into lava, then have gold minecarts melt on impact. No one could argue with that.
A) What makes you so sure Rubies ever will get put in the game?
:cool.gif: Blood Gems are not Rubies, hence why you cannot get them by mining.
I don't see any issues, since source block for Midas Tears doesn't burn, but the flow does, being surrounded by lava just wont give it a chance to flow anywhere, so it'll be a single block surrounded by lava, possibly very hard to see and easy to mistakenly float across in your netheraft.
I do. I find it incredibly frustrating that Sand and gravel have this unique ability to cause cascades, and yet there's no way for the player to take advantage of that, and with Sandstone, it's even LESS likely to find places where sand can cascade anymore.
