Maybe... lava-rain? It'd be a bit more rare than rain in the Overworld and would hurt you by half a heart every 5 seconds? Maybe it could also catch regular wood on fire, but not Grimwood or anything else. I know nothing about coding, sooo, not sure how hard it would be to implement. :3
Slight modification: Chunks of molten lava fall out of the sky. If they hit, 2 hearts damage. Anything they hit that's flammable gets set on fire. However, it is possible to avoid them. (There won't be too many falling at once.)
Acid Rain is what we're more strongly behind, lava rain would be redundant. and for blocks falling, Ash Thermals has this aspect covered in a much more unique manner.

portal block (instantly move between any 2 portal blocks in the same dimension)
No. The whole point of the Nether is to act as a dangerous, but faster method of traveling on the overworld. Being able to create portals in either zone that connect directly to each other would completely undermine that entire foundation that is the entire reason for Nether's existence in the first place.
sanctuary block (mobs can not come within 15 blocks)
I've been toying with the idea that setting up Mushraves in specific patterns would accomplish this to certain degree, not so much that they couldn't wander into it, but that they wouldn't spawn inside of that range. If you had one chase you from outside the range to inside, that's on your head.
The bonus is that it would allow you to use each of the different colors to keep different types of mobs from spawning, so one color prevents hostiles, useful in the Nether where Mobs aren't affected by light levels, and another color could prevent neutral mobs, and the final could prevent friendlies, which could be useful even in the overworld, since friendlies are MORE likely to spawn around light at night.
Wouldn't you sort of want friendliest to spawn? Even in over world? Keep in mind that sheep, pigs etc. are usually considered nuetral, andnthat wolves are the only real friendlies.

Passive is actually more accurate, and some people find them annoying when they are growing crops, and need the light to make sure the crops grow but down want animals spawning in that area to trample the crops
Alright, I see it has it's uses, so I'll leave it alone. But upon fully reading the OP, there is something totally unrelated that I must complain about; soul-glass tools? C'mon, even for the Nether, it's a little far fetched, glass isn't exactly the most durable material. Unless there is some special propery soul-glass has over regular glass... Actually, maybe I should reread that part...

i am not shure you understood.
no movement between neather and main world by portal bloks.
very expensive in nether materials. (so you have to go to the neather and serch for a while for each block)
your complaint is that it is to safe and fast.
here are some changes that might improve it in your mind.
add a chance of failure where you appere at a random point between the blocks.
this would be dangerous becous you could apper in a wall, over a 25 block drop (fatal), of in lava.
this chance could increase exponentialy with distance.
10 block distance = 1% chance then double for every 10 blocks. (or some other number)
then the maximum distance would be ~66 blocks with a ~%90 chance of failure.
not rilly worth it in overworld but in nether that is about 8 chunks (overworld space)
slightly shorter jumps would be MUCH safer.

Glass can actually be very strong, it's called Tempered Glass It wouldn't be at all unreasonable for a sand that has special properties to naturally exhibit properties of tempered glass. Also, it's not like this has diamond level durability. It has a mining strength/damage of iron, but only a durability of stone(or double that in the nether)

You're the one who isn't understanding: the Nether itself, the ENTIRE REASON NOTCH ADDED IT TO BEGIN WITH, is meant to make traveling from point A on the overworld to point B on the overworld faster, but at the cost of being more dangerous. Making ANY type of portal that instantly teleports the player to another portal someplace else would completely negate that feature. It doesn't matter if you're making it expensive. You are saying "add something to the nether that makes it so I don't have any reason to go to back to the nether"
The changes you're talking about render it pointless. We already have minecart booster tracks, build a portal on the overworld, and in the Nether, build a tunnel and minecart tracks with booster tracks to take you through the portal faster and safer.
And all of that is still not even touching on the fact that what you're asking for wouldn't be covered at ALL by the materials already present in this mod, so this would require some completely new ore of some sort that serves absolutely no purpose at all except making these game breaking portals.
First off. "Not even the slightest chance. A) why would you build a crafting bench out of something that makes it hard to see? :cool.gif: how would that make your crafting grid bigger? and C) a larger crafting grid is USELESS. I have stated this many times and will continue to state this: ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING that has any business being in Minecraft can be crafted on the 3x3 grid that already exists. Larger grids are just for people who are sloppy and uncreative about coming up with recipes for things." man, can you back off a bit? It was just a idea... You don't have to be so harsh.
Second, I love the tamable salamander idea, but on the riding... Why can't you just ride the salamander.

the purpose of this thread is to improve the nether past notch's plan.
saying that this is bad beacous it defeats the entire point of the nether is only true if nothing else in this thread is implemented.
also nether travel is faster and more dangerous than overworld travel, what is wrong with portal travel being faster and more dangerous than nether travel?
also each portal block would come from nether materials.

Maybe Midas' tears could also "goldify" items in chests and mineral blocks it passes adjacent to.
Yes. This is full of win
No, it's not. The items are inside the chest's inventory. Midas Tears don't goldify the items in the player's inventory, only the ones in their quickbar, chest has no quickbar. Chest is made of wood, and wood tools/leather armor are not affected by Midas Tears when they are in inventory or quickbar or equipped. there's no reason for Midas Tears to affect chests at all (except possibly to break it if it's in the path of the Midas Tears flow, in which case the items would drop, fall into Midas Tears and either disintegrate or goldify items that are in chests, it's just that they wouldn't be in the chest at the end of the process)

I've put the key word in bold for you. The purpose of this thread is to IMPROVE the Nether, NOT to completely change it from what Notch intended. If you want to hold onto that attitude, leave.
saying that this is bad beacous it defeats the entire point of the nether is only true if nothing else in this thread is implemented.
You're misquoting, what I specifically said was: "the ENTIRE REASON NOTCH ADDED IT TO BEGIN WITH" This is not the same thing as the entire purpose of the Nether, but it IS the entire reason the Notch added it, and I'm not about to just arbitrarily toss that out the window.
also nether travel is faster and more dangerous than overworld travel, what is wrong with portal travel being faster and more dangerous than nether travel?
also each portal block would come from nether materials.
Because either it wont be dangerous enough to warrant defeating the purpose of the Nether, or it will be too dangerous to be worth doing, and whichever it is, it wont be worth adding completely new materials to do it.
this is instant.
instant is faster than minecarts.
And infinite last longer than diamonds, but you don't see any infinite Nether tools in this thread either, now do you?
yes it is less safe.

Not if you build your minecart entrances right.

It's called a spiral. Also there are blocks in the Aether to handle going straight up. This thread is intended to fit alongside that.

I refuse to believe that with a name like "zombie killer" that you don't know other ways in which a pentagram symbol is used.

I like a lot of this, I only think Midas tears would be a system ripe for abuse if Notch ever added more uses for gold.
It still costs you iron or diamond to do, so any abuse is going to be pretty limited.

That is a nice suggestion, but i think its over powerd.
We have now 5 tpyes of tools,
And in this suggestion you add 3 more. :|
I don't think you entirely understand what the term "overpowered" means. The 3 toolsets add unique abilities, but they are not that much stronger than the existing tool tiers. Soul Tools are basically Stone+, Raze are basically Iron+, and Blood are basically Diamond+ and that's only WHILE they are in the Nether. In the overworld their abilities are all weakened.
We need to have a lot more before those things(Like copper[at least]).
Give me 3 things that your "copper" would actually ADD to the game that wouldn't make sense to be done with materials that already exist in minecraft.
The nether has little in it and I, for one, would love to see more added to it. My castles within the nether are almost useless.. ghasts are becoming easy to kill.
Holy crap. I just saw a video walkthrough for the Nether Updates mod. i don't think I've ever heard someone say "it's just like {x overworld item} except it's {different color} and it is found in the Nether." so many times before.
I'm so glad Sabata and I started this thread when we did.
On the tamable and ridable croc...http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt ... sch&itbs=1
Yeah, this man dosnt agree with you. And would you expect to make a portal of obsideon and see floating jellyfish that shoot fire?
And then, how about Midas tears only goldify items that can be gold? And why not instead of the chests, in your quick bar.
And then, how about Midas tears only goldify items that can be gold? And why not instead of the chests, in your quick bar.
Err. . . I'm pretty sure this is how they suggested it, for the most part. Aside from Minecarts, that I can tell. In that case, the minecarts come out as five gold ingots to simulate (or make real, I guess) the cart breaking down into component parts and those becoming gold.
A little time later: Do you mean to say that Midas tears should not destroy anything? I can see that argument, but having those items not goldable destroyed basically makes the tears a double-edged sword. And this is both a part of balance and a fundamental law of the Nether.
Oh, and to try to get back to the current topic;
As more of a side note about eruptions (if they should be included, I can't remember if the idea was to not have them at this point or not), would it be too unbalanced to make the eruptions the only time a minecart/lavaboat would flow UP a flow? The only problem I can currently see with this is that the eruptions, being random, would be impossible to plan anything for.
But!, to try to make some sense of it: Let's say there is a room that houses your diamonds or some Nether resource that was rarer than normal. You don't want anyone, including yourself, getting there. Except in emergencies, which I would consider eruptions that.
So, you place a single lava block in the ground about five blocks below with a minecart track in front of it. Eruption. Lava flows up. Minecart flows upward.
Yeah, unnecessary. But so are massive amounts of redstone to create a cannon that can only have but one use ever. Ah well. See how you like it. Use it if you think it worthy.
that is insignificant beacous there are ~7 cool things here that are not there.
pleas add:
portal block (instantly move between any 2 portal blocks in the same dimension)
sanctuary block (mobs can not come within 15 blocks)
crafting recipies shoild be changed though.
if you do not like these pleas state why. (spisificaly)
