If we were going to they'd probably act the same as our Trolls do currently.
They're about the same size, and mythologically known for their strength, so really it'd just be a different skin for Trolls.
Also, we're just waiting on one thing from Grey atm.
I like the whole idea, but i think that those brands are a little OP, the salamanders would be cool, the midas' touch would take lots of coding to make it not flow over edges. you should probably make it so that any trees that manage to grow ignite after a while if not cut down. other than that, the whole thing is excellent!

are you talking about earth tree because Nether tree freeze so they don't burn and earth tree will burn if put next to lava or fire moving across Netherrack ignites it
hey sabata2 the Aether needs help everyone is talking about the mod we don't want it to get locked
also Lava can catch Netherrack on fire if the embers from the lava touch any of its faces. Fire can also spread to other flammable blocks if they are directly adjacent or diagonally adjacent in any direction, including other Netherrack
butt that will cover the whole Nether in fire because the lave will catch the Netherrack on fire then fire will move
then the lave will catch the same Netherrack on fire then fire will move and repeat and repeat and end the end that will cover the whole Nether in fire

Actually, no. The posts read:

(Nether fire will move, but not multiply)
(snippy for space)
Inert -
Netherrack that has had its fire move to a different Netherrack block will turn "inert" on all sides until it is not subjected to fire or heat sources for several seconds, with Easy difficulty having a much longer inert time period, and hard difficulty having a relatively brief inert period. (this keeps fire from spreading back the way it came from, and helps keep Netherfire from getting too prolific) If Netherrack has a Mushroom/Mushrave on it, it will be treated as "inert" and neither the Netherrack, nor the Mushroom/Mushrave, will catch on fire. A Netherrack block will immediately lose its inert status if the player hits the block in any manner, unless there is a Mushroom/Mushrave growing on the block.
And embers do not constantly spawn. There is about a six-minute average wait between them. And eventually the fire will try to jump to something that is not flammable, more than likely, so the fire will stop.
Lava can catch Netherrack on fire if the embers from the lava touch any of its faces. Fire can also spread to other flammable blocks if they are directly adjacent or diagonally adjacent in any direction, including other Netherrack blocks, but the fire on a Netherrack block will be put out if it spreads to another Netherrack block. All sides of Netherrack can now also catch on fire, but only from the player, lava embers, or another Netherrack block that has the same side on fire. (Nether fire will move, but not multiply)
so yes it will if left unchecked lava will cover the whole Nether in fire
sabata2 will you go and fix the op so lava will not ignite Netherrack
unless you want the whole Nether in fire unless you so to speck have to trim the fire by your base thats also cool
I felt Omega described it well enough weq.
Admittedly it will need tweaking once it's implemented but as is it's sound in not igniting the entire nether.
And remember Deadbrush kills any fire within the 27 blocks squarely surrounding it. It does not mark the blocks as inert, it will KILL the fire once it moves there.
As for the Midas Tears not flowing down, it's actually a simple REMOVAL of code to make it work.
Currently it's "If flow block "is above" air block then replace air block with full flow block"
Delete that line of code and tada, midas tears will not flow over edges.
It's a SIMPLE fix because it visually looks like it will flow over, but it will not in actuality.
Lastly, @weq, I'm not sure what I'd do for the Aether mod. I'm mainly a concept guy, loved the Aether concept, and greatly dislike the ways the mod changed the concept. If I were to help in the modding aspects I'd start changing everything to be just like the concept.
As for the mod...
Yofreke and Gkardos will be active on the mod roughly by the end of the week.
We're waiting on Grey to finish up a sprite sheet for them to work on blocks and items. ETA on that is the end of the week.
We are STILL looking for modders who want to help. This is a particularly large task and the more experienced workers we have, the better.

no i mean their is a flame war Aether mod vs Aether suggestion at the Aether suggestion thread
maybe you could put them back on topic you are a big name their
I can't really. I'd take the side of the Suggestion over the Mod, and the only reason that discussion exists is because the Modders closed their own thread so they could work without having to constantly read "WHAN DIS RELEEZ?!"
From there the mod supporters migrated to the suggestion thread and fail to realize that:
1) The suggestion came first
2) Saying the Mod is better is ASKING for a fight in the suggestion thread
3) Until the Mod thread opens back up, the suggestion guys don't know any more than what's public.
I don't have the time, nor patience to post/repost/rerepost this information over and over.
...
Plus, isn't the Aether thread (both of them) locked now?

Hey, I just noticed a small glitch... if a salamander is in lava, it will try to pull in ANYTHING in range. on hard, a spiked grem does 4 dmg on contact (insta break) and on normal two hits will break it (contact is maintained, after all). would the salamander commit suicide trying to snag the grem, or would it wisen up and stop attacking it?

Hrmm... I'm not entirely sure.
I don't think the spikes will auto-detach the tongue, but that doesn't mean the Salamander will win.
The salamander will pull the grem into the lava, igniting it, causing it damage, and bring it in biting range. While at the same time, once in biting range the grem will be dealing 4 damage to the salamander.
The Grem has less health, but would deal more damage (4 compared to roughly 3.5), and it would probably try to run away once lassoed.
I'm gonna have to say that it's an interesting hypothetical. We'll probably add to the Grem that it'll run away if lassoed, and maybe give the lasso/tongue some limit so that if the mob is constantly moving back it'll break free.
In the end though, this is DEFINITELY going to be something that's going to have to be ironed out in post release.
Personally, I don't care if things kill themselves on the Grems. That's why the grems have the spikes.
However this can EASILY be addressed simply by having it so that the Grem registers being grabbed as an attack, which sets it running, and the salamander has to wait a few moments after its tongue is attacked before it can try to use it to grab things again. So when it damages its tongue on the grem, it wont just auto try again until it's dead.
Oh, as an additional note about the "moving fire" deal. The fire would only move across the same plane
Oh, and it's taken far longer than it should have, but I think I have a solid design for the Fright Bulbs now.
I've taken the leaves that stick out of the soil, that function as a pressure plate for detonating them, and broken the outline of the circle up to help make it clearer that they are more like little extensions from teh tips of the leaves. This should also help reduce the "OMG it's a PENTAGRAM!" issue that people are having, while still retaining the base effect.
I've also finally put down the images for the actual frightbulb item, which can be planted if aiming at dirt type blocks, or lit like a grenade otherwise (at which point it will appear as the glowy eye version to show it is active and that it can't be planted. With that design established, it should be much clearer why, when planted, their leaves form that pattern on the surface of the block they are planted in.
