This is my proposal for a simple, easy to implement way to keep griefing out of the minds of SMP players.
What this would consist of the crafting of a Territory Marker:
[] [] [] [] [] []
The appearance of the Beacon would be like a redstone torch but instead of red it would have the same color and texture that diamonds do.
This would provide a 15 block wide and all vertical blocks area (same as the light level of a torch) where any user except the player who placed the beacon could NOT alter those blocks (including the Beacon itself, and blocks below and above it, DUH!). A player could NOT place a Territory Beacon within the bounds of another players Territory Beacon. The only real flaw with this is the use of diamond, but anything less rare would be to spammable, so this only works late game.
The problem with this suggestion is that if any individual player can impose building-restrictions on a SMP server, then things are going to get really messy really fast. There are going to be a lot of conflicts between neighboring players. In order to maintain order, only admins should have the power to protect areas.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM ONLY PLEASE!
It requires diamond so the griefer would have to actually TRY to grief by having to mine like all hell to get to the diamond.
That just means the victim didn't bother to get diamonds fast enough. His/Her fault.
Double edged sword
Yes I am a ____________ Miner.
Yes I have no profile picture.
Yes that is a bad idea.
