(I apologies for any grammar mistakes in this as I’m using a phone to write this and it’s also very late lol)
This is a suggestion that I have thought about for awhile and I feel like it fits into Minecraft as a whole and could be the start to a few more useful pets.
It’s needless to say Minecraft is a game of creativity and exploration this leads me to say the obvious that Minecraft is also an extremely unique game and what ever is added has a huge effect on the people who play it. The reason i bring this up because you see a lot of people suggesting that Mojang add all these new pets that have no use in the game... I see no point in this as there is no reason to add new mobs if there is no use for them apart from raising awareness for an endangered species an example of this is pandas.
Although there is no harm in suggesting anything and I would always encourage it I feel like mojang wont add new useless animal pets if there is still ONE with no purpose.
This is of course the PARROT a mob I despise with pure hatred and if it’s going to be constantly making baby zombie noises then it might as well do something for me in return.
My suggestion is to add a sort of reduced fall damage to your player if a tamed parrot is on your shoulder. This new use wouldn’t be anything op and would only decrease the damage to what feather falling 1 reduces (12%) and if you had 2 on your shoulders then a possible fall damage reduction the same as feather falling 2 does (24%).
I believe this would make to at least some degree of “Minecraft” sense as if on your shoulder mid fall the parrot will have a wing flapping animation making it look like it’s trying to fly but of course your too heavy with that said you yourself (Minecraft character) would physically be falling at the slightest tiniest bit slower then usual but without the particles (this would be barely noticeable).
This would be useful in a game such as Minecraft as it allows a very early game fall damage reduction and gives parrots a use.
(Once again I apologies for any grammar mistakes, I’ve looked over it a few times and haven’t found anything but it is pretty late so I may of missed a few)
I'm not wholly opposed, though to keep Feather Falling valuable, I think a better alternative would be to let Parrots "carry" a player for a very short distance before the player drops as normal. Basically think a temporary glide, but with no motion control. Jumping while moving forward, then holding the jump key while in the air, will cause your Parrots to flap. Realistically each Parrot shouldn't be able to carry the player for more than 5 blocks (if the player is sprinting when they jump), after which they'll tire and stop flapping. Two Parrots will carry the player for up to 10 blocks maximum. Parrots will now dismount if the player falls more than 8 blocks, and they will not mount a player wearing Elytra (to prevent weird interactions between Elytra and Parrots)
This would make Parrots quite useful since they'd help players cover smaller obstacles like ravines, while not undercutting the value of Elytra as a superior transport option, or Feather Falling as a means to prevent damage. They'd sort of be like the Bundles to your Shulker Box, if you take my meaning--similar in purpose, but different in function and ultimately inferior to Shulker Boxes outside of a few niche scenarios.
I completely understand your point about it taking value from feather falling and your idea about a temporary glide really is a creative feature, but my thinking is that parrots of course are very annoying to keep around as well as to be actually keeping them on your shoulder if you are sprinting and jumping around this is obviously extremely in-effective which in this case I am all for as it’s a lot easier in general to just enchant your boots for the long run.
That is my thought process behind keeping ff’s value in the game. (I also would be behind if instead of ff2 for two birds that instead having one bird allows a decrease of 6-8% (quite substantially lower than ff1) and then having two bird allows your idea of a slight glide.
(Thank you for actually giving feedback and suggesting ways to improve it as many don’t👍)

I propose parrots to instead provide timed Slow Fall effect before deattaching.
Otherwise great idea, animals should have utilities in minecraft.

Totalitarian architecture. Angular, defensible masonry over sleek, sloped carpentry.
Taking it slow. Provoking into attack typically does better rushing.
Underground engineering. Well-lit tunnels are much safer and often cheaper than any surface construct.
-----
Farmability. One of primary concerns relating to any feature.
Practical mobs. No annoyances taking up space and processor power.
Generalism and simplicity. Overly complicated and specialized concepts hardly ever come into fruition.
I completely agree And with this thread tbh I was suggesting an idea to more push the point of pets needing use (as they all do apart from parrots) and your slow fall proposition is very well fitted.

?
Nah I think parrots are just fine the way they are.
Dancing to music and making babyzombie sounds sure isn't usefull but it's cool!
Bats on the other hand are realy annoying.
It's okay that they dont drop anything but i hate fighting creepers in small corridors with a bat in between!
They arent just annoying, they run into your sword at the worst times!
