I think both formations should have a proper 3d model, just to make them look structurally sound, and so that they better fit in with the cave environment.
You're right. They don't look the best. However, making them a cross model is less resource intensive, so I think we should let resource packs handle the custom 3D models.
I definitely agree! I was a bit disappointing by the stalactite and stalagmite models- they fit well enough with the new dripstone biome... but nowhere else. I like how Quark approaches stalactites and stalagmites, (it never stops being fun to say these two words), by having one, two, and three block tall variants, which can generate on any stone type. They really make caves seem more dynamic and interesting, without going outside the realms of the Vanilla feel. Yes, as long as we're getting the caves and cliffs up date, I would certainly approve of more pointy rocks in caves. (I can only type stalactites and stalagmites so many times before my brain starts hurting from the effort of spelling them properly.)
Well, actual stalactites and stalagmites aren't formations that live in every cave type, they're only made of limestone: so they only appear in limestone caves.
I don't know if texturing them in other material makes sense.
Caves made of other materials don't even have the same phenomena. For instance, lava tubes are usually near round in section shape and would not be very natural-looking with spikes into them. Also dry caves wouldn't have enough water to form stalactites (and the stalagmites) in the first place, and so on.

I oppose this. The x-shaped double texture is staple of many minecraft objects, like flowers, mushrooms, grass, and so on - they have a vanilla feeling it it.
The stalagmites pierconick has shown look way too much like a mod, and I strongly prefer the ones Mojang is currently using.

Totalitarian architecture. Angular, defensible masonry over sleek, sloped carpentry.
Taking it slow. Provoking into attack typically does better rushing.
Underground engineering. Well-lit tunnels are much safer and often cheaper than any surface construct.

Farmability. One of primary concerns relating to any feature.
Practical mobs. No annoyances taking up space and processor power.
Generalism and simplicity. Overly complicated and specialized concepts hardly ever come into fruition.

Constantly evolving, reaching further heights.
