Hi! In Minecraft, there are several companions you can tame that provide utilities, such as the wolf, cat, horse, llama, and soon to be axolotl. In this thread, I will propose an addition to improve the wolf specifically:
Wolf Armor!
This is a very popular suggestion and for good reason. This is how I believe it should be implemented: Wolf armor can be found in the loot tables of chests in dungeons, pillager outposts, temples, etc, and in three tiers, similar to horse armor. By shift-clicking on a tamed wolf, an inventory should appear containing a slot in which the armor could be equipped.
Why would this be beneficial and fun?
- It would maintain consistency with horse armor.
- It's another rare item to be found in chests, incentivizing exploration.
- It would make wolves actually helpful in combat! It isn't currently a good idea to fight mobs with a pet wolf. This is because they tend to be quite aggressive in close quarters combat, making them especially vulnerable to creepers. They also almost inevitably take some damage when fighting any type of mob, so they will die quickly without constantly being healed and monitored. Making them more resilient would make keeping them healed in combat much more practical.
- It wouldn't be overpowered. I don't think wolves should be doing more damage, and the armor should be rare. You would also still need to heal them regularly.
- It would spice up combat! Mojang has made many changes recently to show that they are interested in adding more strategy and variety to fights with shields, tridents, crossbows, and even an entirely separate branch of development working on a combat update. Helpful mobs being viable weapons would be another unique and fun aspect of combat in Minecraft. If you have the skills and time to find and equip them, building a party of fighters could be a great new strategy. Mojang is even working on implementing an axolotl mob with a very similar philosophy by making them hostile to Elder Guardians.
- It would allow people to be more attached to their Minecraft wolves They are really cute and it's sad when they die. I think they should be protected at all costs and not so vulnerable all the time.
- It would be convenient. I always want to take my wolf on adventures, but it can be stressful to keep him safe. Adding wolf armor would be a balanced way to implement a quality-of-life change that many adventurers would appreciate.
- It would be easy. All of these benefits could be accomplished using an item and mechanic similar but distinct to one already in the game.
There are also a few more tweaks I suggest to balance this feature out:
- Wolves should spawn more rarely and only in Taiga or Forest biomes (One or the other, not both) This would also incentivize exploration and encourage players to seek out different scenery.
- Wolves should only be able to eat cooked meat such as steak or pork chops. This would prevent people from simply using rotten flesh to heal their wolves basically for free.
- Wolves should only be able to be bred using Golden Apples, similar to horses, to prevent people from breeding hordes of wolves.
These changes together, in my opinion, would shift wolves away from being common, expendable, a hassle to take care of, and not particularly helpful, to be uncommon, valuable, worth protecting, and a helpful companion for adventures, fighters, miners, and crafters. I know that 1.17 is planned to be the Caves and Cliffs update, so I think that this suggestion would fit more realistically as an addition to the combat snapshots currently being worked on by Jeb.
Thank you for reading and for your consideration! Any constructive criticism and feedback are greatly appreciated
Sounds kinda weird, but not at all problematic in terms balance
I think we could even have it craftable
Attack dogs are easy to get and use in mass quantity either way

Why not make it simpler by making "horse" armor be applicable to dogs or horses? It may not make much sense but personally I'd rather have the convenience of not having two types of armor that are useless to a player without any animals.

Horse is way bigger and individually more useful than wolf, and its armor rare, and it would be way more cost-efficient to use a flood of unarmored dogs than a few ones clad in armor obtained exclusively through looting.

This is why I suggest making wolves spawn more rarely and only be bred using golden apples to prevent using floods of wolves.
That would completely shift game balance.
At the moment dogs are easily available in taiga early game.
Additionally, wolves mainly live on flesh, fruit are more or less backup food source for them. Golden apples seem completely unfitting to me.
And I see no reason why not to use floods of wolves.
