i made this post in the minecraft feedback website as well, but i wanted to share it here too to see what people think.
so the glowsquid won, im not particularly happy about that but lets make the best that we have.
lets be honest, if the glow squid fails to furfill the prupose its name says..glow (aka emit light arround it, act as a moveable light source) it will be extremely dissapointing and forgetful.
however making it work like that would simply be really hard and require an entire rework of the lightning engine, which is something they dont want, and to prevent the glowsquid from beeing only useful to those with shaders, i want to propose a way to allow the glowsquid to glow, without dynamic lightning:
Every 100 ticks the glow squid will drip a small glowing ink particle from its body (similar to how bees dirip honey). Once the glowing ink hits a surface, it will create a glowing ink splatter (imagine it like a redstone dust placed on the floor)
Glowing ink splatters:
- if waterlogged will decay by one stage every 20 ticks, they have 4 decay stages
Decay 0; 12 light
Decay 1: 8 light
Decay 2: 4 light
Decay 3: 1 light
20 ticks after decay level 3, the splatter dissapears
- They will not decay if not waterlogged
- It can be mined with silk touch and picked up by the player to craft glowing dye
Glowing dye can be used on leather armor, glowing dye leather armor will have a similar effect to the squid, dripping in glowing ink every 100 ticks, the drips from all glowing dye'ed items are different to the squids:
- They always decay regardless of waterlogged or not
- They cannot be picked up in any way Same thing could be extended to wools, and other items It allows for a reneweable source of lighting as well as making glowsquid cooler
thats basically the idea that i have, it uses all mechanics that we already have (the dripping is easily reproduceable via the honey drips from the bee, making this particle have an effect once it comes in contact with the floor, light levels and decay similar to leaves/farmland can do) in order to produce a intresting effect to the glowsquid
They dont need to change the whole lighting engine just make light source on mob block (or mini block[block for each texture]to be more precise) it yould take a week at most I can make it in 5 days by MYSELF you are overexagurating
