Before placing a block, the player can toggle between different styles, allowing a single material to have more than one flavor. There would be multiple terrain files, and a material would be drawn from a rectangle on different terrain files, depending on a flag, which is set when the player places a block.
Why not use a texture pack, or just use different materials. This would get annoying if you had to build a big project, but constantly had to select the texture. I have to say no.
No. The player would not have to select the texture EVERY time they place a new block. They only have to choose the texture when they want to change it from the one currently selected. The currently selected texture is stored separately for each material type, so that the texture would not have to be re-selected after switching between the use of different materials. And of course, the reason is pretty obvious why the use of texture packs wouldn't accomplish multiple simultaneous textures for different blocks of the same material.
