we shud hav obs weps do mor than D tools, dur da durr...
thats just an example but its not what im suggesting
What I'm suggesting is that you can only make an obsidian sword something like this

In real life Obsidian is VERY Sharp and some ancient cultures used it as a weapon because it was more effective than Iron and some forms of steel, but its very fragile stuff almost like glass. For this idea the sword would do more damage than iron but LESS than diamond and also be as fragile if not moreso than a sword made of wood.
so it would kill mobs fast but break rather easily. I'm unsure on the EXACT damages of iron and diamond * checks Wiki*
Okay a diamond sword takes away 5 hearts and an iron sword takes away 4 so for my idea to work an obsidian sword would have to do 4.5 hearts.
as for durability Diamond has 1562 durability "points" and Iron has 251, wood has 60 and i said it would be as fragile if not weaker than wood so the Obs sword would have around 50-55 durability. which is a plus side because in real life obsidian weapons are a 1 shot kind of deal because the Obs sticks into your enemy causing massive bleeding damage. so thats just my idea, please don't troll me about how Obs tools are so game breaking because all im suggesting is an Obs sword. Which makes sense from a real life stand point.
The reason?
you might ask if its so fragile and what not and its only a half heart More than iron why even bother?
well your iron would be freed up to make other more usefull things LIKE PICKS
and then Diamond swords would only be for the elite and such. that and even just half a heart can make a hell of a difference in player vs player combat when both people have armor and health items. ( of course to be truly effective you might need to bring more than one!)
Basically, people say you can farm it too easy, so I created a way to handicap the farming.
This was my system.
2 Obsidian blocks = 1 Obsidian ingot. Also takes twice as much coal.
Obsidian tools = 600 ish uses. Spread between iron and Diamond.
Limitation = Can't mine ores like red-stone, and diamond. Due to red stone reacting with Obsidian badly, and diamond being too hard. Obsidian tools, are made of refined pure obsidian, so mixing the pure tool with the impure block makes a bad reaction, therefor, obsidian tools cannot be used for obsidian mining. (Just added this)
Obsidian blocks = Take more than one use from a diamond pick, say like 1 diamond pick axe can get a max of like 40ish obsidian blocks. (Obviously changeable)

hmm i see, i really like the Ingots system and that it uses double the normal fuel, hmmm the limitations also seem fair however i do think the uses are too high being that Obsidian is so fragile in real life.. but i suppose in minecraft its the 2nd or 3rd strongest thing in the game, the others being of course Diamond and Bedrock.
I usually make a diamond sword before a diamond pick. It tends to lasts longer, has more of a use, takes less diamonds, I've never had a need for obsidian that I can't just mold with buckets of lava and water.
This does not change any of that.
I'll just gladly be a "pro" as you like to say that and never ever touch obsidian because I don't want to spend 3 diamonds on an overrated tool in order to get a weapon that won't even last a night, is weaker than the tool I could have made if I had been smarter with my diamonds, and the materials require me to travel all the way down the shaft to lava level and spend inane amounts of time just to gather 2 obsidian blocks.
No, your idea is underpowered and just plain useless.
No For you.

My idea is based off of what I myself have seen in worlds any SP world i generate seems to have no diamonds anywhere to be found, same goes for many of the multiplayer worlds i've played on.
I'm sorry if your worlds have hundreds of diamonds that you can just use.
Most hostile mobs have 10 HP.
An Iron sword kills them in three hits.
A diamond sword kills them in two hits.
This version of an obsidian sword kills them in three hits.
Iron is abundant.
No point to an obsidian sword. Using two iron bars to make a sword isnt going to put a big dent in your supply of iron.
This version of an obsidian sword breaks quickly.
A iron sword is a better sword then this version of an obsidian sword.
There is no point to an obsidian sword when a iron sword is better.
If obsidian weapons are going to be fragile as wood, it sort of screws with obsidian being the only surefire defense against creeper explosions...
thats true but it blurs the line between realism and Minecraft reality. would a stronger damaging sword but a semi-low durability be a better alternative to this Obs sword?
