A while ago, my sister and I suddenly thought of something. Why do cats have different breeds and looks while dogs don't? Like every dog looks the same. It's unfair that cats get to have different breeds and look different from each other while dogs can only have one breed and look exactly the same. I think that having different breeds of dogs will make a huge change in Minecraft. Having a cute golden retriever or a little chihuahua in Minecraft as your pet dog might make things much more fun.
What does everyone else think? Do you think Minecraft should add this to their future updates?
What we think of as dogs in Minecraft are actually wolves, so one could argue that they shouldn't have different breeds. Cats in Minecraft are really all the same except for their colors. Maybe someday Mojang will introduce a new mob called "dog", and it would be nice, but it is not high on my personal wish list.
I think it would make sense if, once an animal is domesticated, its appearance changes. You don't see farm pigs walking around in the wild, they're wild boars, and you don't see domestic cows or chickens either. So, they could start with a more feral appearance, and then change to the current skin once domesticated.
As for turning wolves into dogs, either it could be a random breed they turn into upon domestication, or, as I suggested in a previous thread, feeding them certain foods will determine their breed.
For example, feeding them mutton will turn the into a sheep dog, as they are fed meat from a sheep. I'm not sure on other dog breeds though.
I agree with Toadrunner. We don't tame dogs in the wild, we tame wolves. Remember getting cats before the 1.14 update? You would go into a jungle to find an ocelot. Once you found the ocelot you would tame it with fish and it would be come a random breed of cat. Things are quite different now. Instead of taming ocelots you tame actual cats in villages.
In the future, Mojang can add a dog mob to the game and it could work the same like with cats. You could go into a village and find the dog breed you want.
I propose different colorations for Forest, Birch Forest, Taiga, Snowy Taiga wolves that might be tamed into various breeds.
The wolves and dog breeds, by the way, might have different characteristics - for example jack-of-all-trades Taiga dog, slow-but-durable Snowy Taiga shepherd with thick fur, speedy-but-fragile hunting dog for Forests, and maybe a Birch Forest Wiener Dog that scares away certain kinds of mobs, for example Spiders, or Cave Spiders. Wolves might alternatively share the same inferior traits in relation to dogs they are tamed to - dog breeds were achived through specialisation.
