This idea simply comes from the fact that in large scale minecraft builds, mining a crapton of cobble stone to make some giant castle is time consuming, and repetative until it is boring. My solution would be to be able to quickly craft (i.e. your 2x2 grid) larger cubes for placement... say a 2x2x2 cube, that would reduce the time to make huge bases. This would be as simple as filling your 2x2 crafting grid with THE SAME type of material for the 2x2x2 cube.
This would simple be coded as if you placed and cube of 8 blocks at once to simplify things when TNT or creeper explosions would occur. Mining the cube would require the appropriate pick (or shovel) that the 1x1 block would use, and when the appropriate axe or shovel was used it would drop the 2x2x2 cube.
Apart from that, most walls and/or buildings - at least the ones I build - require more detailed structures than that. I rarely use walls of the same material with a thickness of 2. I either exchange materials, leave gaps, fill them with redstone or liquids. Not sure if this is true for others, but that's one of the points which makes me, personally, think that those cubes are not really needed.
While yes the input-output is not equal, to make half blocks to put in 3 whole blocks and get out of it 3 half blocks.
Crafting halfblocks gives more aesthethic options while cutting down your resources, which is balanced. Doubling the amount of cobblestone for large projects does not make sense. You can always take a block and cut away part of it, but you will never be able to take a block and just expand it.
Other than that, what would it add to minecraft in your eyes?

It's adding a way to more easily produce very large scale bases.
My case being where to have the glass windows appear with one cobblestone block above and below it on the inside whereas on the outside (due to the floor and ceiling) there would be 2 blocks above and below. The addition of a 2 cube would greatly reduce the time needed to add extra floors.
Other cases could be similar, say for a large statue or large tower of some sort.

Any suggestions?
CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM ONLY!
Crafting Output: A block worth 8 Cobblestone

I actually made that suggestion before, but it got bogged down by jeeps and other piece of crap suggestions.
