What about sloped blocks? I would think they'd only be for the 'soft' building materials. That's dirt, gravel, and sand. (Dirt would follow the same grass growing rules.) Their purpose would be entirely aesthetic although they'd also work as stairs. However, the biggest draw-back to the idea is that it might mess up the 'cubic aesthetic' that Minecraft has going on.
The details of the idea are:
It would be a 1 to 1 ratio with the base block. One dirt block becomes 1 dirt wedge. It shows up as a brown triangle in your inventory.
It takes up the same physical space as a half-block. If you dig it up, you recieve one dirt block (not a wedge.)
The trick is what it looks like when you place it. It will have a restiction that it can only be placed on the side of a block. (Pretty much like a painting is now.) It maps 2 corners to the top of the block you attach it to. The other two corners slope down to the bottom of the square.
(I apologize for the scary-bad photoshops.)
If the blocks next to it are removed, it pops back into a dirt pickup. (Kind of like cactus that grow next to an overhang.)
When there are blocks on more than one edge is where it gets confusing. I'm not sure how to deal with it. The easiest way is to just repeat the concept for each block it's adjacent too. The system will draw 1 to 4 wedges in the various orientations, and the renderer would just have to be clever enough to deal with it. Since it just behaves as a half-block, there shouldn't be any crazy 'physics' to deal with.
I don't know if there's a need to have the terrain generator automatically make these blocks on all slopes. I guess it might be possible, but that would totally change what the worlds look like rather than just giving more options on player constructions.
Well, they aren't squares, they're cubes and rectangular prisms. I kind of wish the liquids showed their slants in a blocky way. This is what I mean: [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
And it would look exactly like that instead of the triangular look.

I am just a guy looking for good suggestions that are original, creative, and match the theme of Mine-craft. I have some mob ideas that I need help forming which is a community project.
I've actually been wanting something similar to this myself. I wanted to make a house in side a hill, and when I was done, I really wanted it to be sloped. I honestly don't think Notch will put this in, but it would be pretty cool.
Agreed, it would be cool, but the best thing you can do is steps and half blocks.
