I was thinking that maybe the moon should work more like the real life counterpart in our own sky, and have a phasing cycle. Currently the moon is always full and provides an ambient light of 4. The new system could change how much of the moon was showing by some increment x and that number would determine the ambient light on the ground. A full moon would provide light level 4 and a new moon would provide level 1. I understand that this wouldn't be as drastic a change to the game, but I think it would add a new element of strategy and be pretty simple to implement.
Would this only ever bother you because it makes exploring at night harder? Would it be completely broken if you didn't get a full moon on your first night? Is this just terrible and I should just go eat my own farts? What do you think?
As in a new animation where it would have a cycle, right? I would like it if Midnight always had a light level of 4, but the sky wouldn't be as dark if the Moon was full and darker when it's receding.
Pretty interesting idea but would there be any other noticeable changes affected by the phases of the moon besides light levels (and subsequently the amount of mobs that spawn)?

True, but moon phases and seasons are separate things.
I'm sorry I worded it the way I did, so let me clear this up.
I wasn't trying to say that seasons were directly linked to the lunar cycle, I was simply trying to say that a more complex time cycle then just day and night (i.e. seasons) should be added, and if they are having the lunar cycle would compliment the seasons.
For the sake of simplicity, I don't think this should have any more effect other than the amount of visibility the moon provides. And I'm pretty sure more monsters don't spawn the darker it is, they either can or cannot spawn. So whoever directed the question about changing mobs, I think is moot.
At present the minecraft solar system seems to involve a sun and moon on opposite sides of the earth that don't move, while the earth spins. The evidence of their lack of movement is that the moon is fixed in the starmap, and that the sun is always at the opposite side.
The moon is always full (looks that way, tho hard to say) because it is at the opposite side of the earth of the sun, but in no way blocked by the earth (so it must be off center a bit from opposite of the sun), so that the side of the moon facing the earth always receives full sun coverage.
For the moon to maintain its current nightly rise and fall and have phases, the phases would need to be caused by tiny back and forth motions through the earths shadow (causing different levels of lunar eclipse). This is the only way I can think of that makes sense, tho it is less than ideal.
For the moon to have phases as we know it, it could no longer be the counterpoint to the sun, which would actually take away from the game in my opinion. The moon rising at the beginning of night and setting at the end of night is different than real life, but its actually a nice way of easily seeing how much longer the night will be.
I would like to see the starmap move relative to the moon tho. In which case all that needs to be done is the moon should rotate through the sky slightly faster than the starmap. This would atleast imply that the earth rotates the sun and that the moon moves with it. Tho it can either mean that the moon rotates the earth so slowly as to only make a rotation around the earth once a year (so that its always on the opposite side of the earth as the sun) or that the moon also rotates the sun but is lined up with the earth.
Either way, this would mean the earth has a yearly cycle, allowing seasons, that could be determined by observing the starmap for the moons position in it.
It would be nice if the starmap had more details in it, like differently colored stars, nebula, galaxies, milky way type features, constellations, and other details to make it easier to recognize what time of year it was.

I don't think the moon should have phases, and this is why:
Quote from GreyAcumen »
- The Moon is a Giant Enemy Mob Spawner, and not really a moon. This explains;
~ Why the splash screen says; "That's no moon!"
~ Why enemies spawn during the night.
~ Why the moon has no phases.
- The Moon is accessed by having a 2x2 square of water on the ground bordered by 8-12 blocks that are on fire while the Moon is overhead. (this prevents access from the Nether and Aether)
- While on the Moon;
~ It is always Night. (stars overhead, but no moon)
~ The player is on the FAR side of the moon, and as such will never actually see the Overworld.
~ neither fire/lava/torches work, now water (is always placed as ice, when ice is broken on moon, drops ice block(non-stackable)
~ Gravity is reduced, so the player can jump higher and fall slower(and further without getting hurt)
~ With reduced gravity, the player also takes longer(not instantaneous) to get up to full speed, change direction, or come to a full stop.
~ Sand, Glowstone, Mossy Cobblestone and White Stone(marble?) are the standard block.
~ Special "Moon" blocks all affect gravity in some way(Increase/decrease/reverse/re-orient gravity while walking on)
~ Enemy Mob Spawner blocks are also common, and can be mined if they are on top of a White Stone. Mob Spawners will burn if exposed to natural sunlight.
~ Teleporter Pads are also frequently located near Mob Spawners, and any mob/player that stands on it will be teleported to a random Mob Spawner (generally in the overworld, frequently in a dungeon) Teleporter pads can be crafted with a mob spawner to make the teleporter always send mobs/players to that specific mob spawner. Teleporter pads are the player's only route back to the overworld.
Wickedshot your overly complicated explaination of why the rotation of the skybox image is currently not in line with our own universe makes me think your trying to agree with me. but i really have no idea what your saying. That said, please dont explain yourself further.
Greyacumen i appreciate a funny post and a bump as much as any guy, but if you are going to argue a bunch of inane points, please do it in some other thread.

Retired StaffI think this is a good idea, but you should eat your farts anyway, just in case.

Retired StaffI realize that, it's just kind of tricky with quotes and all, but I'll fix that.
Edit: Never mind, you can't delete old posts.
