I agree that it makes logical sense that it would work. On the other hand, unless you are in some crazy bizarro world where you have easy access to hundreds upon hundreds of gunpowder but zero redstone, there is no reason I would want to use gunpowder for this. It isn't like this makes Nether-only survival easier since you can't get sand in the Nether anyways.

Mojang has stated they want to keep redstone consistent and easy to understand for new players. TNT is one of the most common introductions to redstone for players, and adding something confusing like this would only make redstone more convoluted and confusing.
What for? Ever since the advent of electricity, it has been the go-to method for explosive detonation. Redstone, being MC's equivalent of electricity, is the most logical TNT trigger.
I agree with OP. But not instead. They should be both. So you want do a contraption, with signals and etc to blow the TNT? Use Redstone. You want to put a TNT on the ground and make a fuse so you can light it from safety? Use gunpowder, 1 per block, but it will be consumed by the fire and lost. I think it's a great suggestion.

There is one major problem with redstone: You can't send signals a long distance without repeaters. If you do so, it's unnecessarily time-consuming to make sure you do so every 16 blocks. With gunpowder, it'd be a lot simpler: lay down a long enough fuse, light it, and watch from a safe distance. Although I do agree with FirEmerald in that string should be used; it's a lot more common than gunpowder, which you may have probably exhausted crafting TNT anyway.

I mean yeah that is true, but how often does a scenario come up where you need to light TNT from a great distance away and it is impossible or incredibly difficult to not work around using redstone or simply lighting the TNT manually and then just sprinting away? I know that it is above "Never" but frequency of how often something would be needed is an important thing to consider when adding something, even if it doesn't outright mean it should never be added.
I'm also okay with the idea to use string, since it only has 1 intended use when placed currently. So I think that would be preferable to using Gunpowder.

I consistently kill more creepers than spiders and cave spiders (which are over-represented since I made them spawn anywhere below sea level); note that this only counts player kills, so creepers that blew up aren't included (tip - Knockback II makes creepers ridiculously easy to kill, you can also hide behind a corner and they will reset their fuse):
Of course, creeper dungeons do not exist (not that spawners should be exploitable for drops anyway) and string can be found in large amounts in mineshafts but this source isn't renewable. Then again, redstone is far easier to obtain than either, at least as far as my playstyle goes, with branch-mining being far more effective than caving, and won't be consumed as blocks destroyed by TNT explosions have a 100% drop rate (only one explosion must be done at a time as items will still be destroyed):
This is from the second play session; 73 redstone blocks is 657 redstone dust (average from 146 ore without Fortune to 110 with Fortune III):

I was about to repeat the point that this had no use but then I thought this was a good point. That being said as Badprenup said, there's no real point to blowing things up at a distance either.
TNT itself is a bit of a disappointment to me personally especially as it relates to mining. You would think that as with explosives in real life you could use it to tear down some hills in order to drive a road through a hilly area or flatten the terrain enough for building, but the reality is that when using it against stone it only clears a 3x3x3 cube, and once you've crafted it and set it all up, it almost takes more time than it would to just hack at that stone with an unenchanted iron pickaxe. TNT does blow up a whole lot more dirt, but even then an iron shovel is just cleaner and less expensive IMO.
The only real other reason I might use TNT is just having fun watching stuff explode, an activity which I normally do in creative mode as it's a lot less expensive, and in which I don't really need to worry about distancing myself away from my destruction.
As for devious purposes in the off chance that I need to blow up a threat while standing more than ten blocks away from it (which, when we're talking PvE, never really happens since mobs despawn when you get far enough away from them) and in the off chance that I have so much gunpowder that I'm okay using against mobs, I think redstone is far less expensive. I would even say that string is less expensive, although I suppose it depends on how much you actually need gunpowder to use on TNT vs how much string you need to use on... tripwire? A bunch of dispensers? Plus the added benefit of using string is that string is already a block in the game that we can use.
No Support... at most support for the idea of using string as a fuse.

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.

What 'safe distance'? TNT explosions have a max damage range of 7 blocks.
I mean, I have no issue with gunpowder/string/whatever ADDED as a method of exploding TNT, as long existing methods are left alone.

You lose some of the redstone from doing that and what's left over is reusable, which is what gunpowder avoids-one time use only. Yes, it seems cheaty to not need repeaters, but do you want those to get blown up? This seems safer for TNT mining.

Work around using redstone usually means pushing the lit TNT away from the redstone lighter so the redstone doesn't blow up too, if you want a reusable TNT blaster. I've made one such several times, mostly for going down though. Gunpowder might be a better way, by connecting the end of the safe area away from the blast which has redstone to the danger area which has gunpowder and will be consumed anyway. Makes the whole system more efficient and less complicated (no water slides etc. to push the lit TNT entity).

To blow up TNT from afar, we use gunpowder instead of redstone. We can place gunpowder on the ground like redstone.
ok, but then wouldn't the gunpowder just blow up?
Who's that behind you?
It makes sense in a real-world logical way, but is a waste of time to implement in a gameplay sense. Why would this be important?

It would make more sense to make it string instead of gunpowder.

instead = 100% no support.
Untraceable redstone wiring plus extra explosive force along the way.
It would blow up in a line, kind of like pouring oil in a line and setting it on fire.
