Pointless. Just get some and you have all the smooth stone you need. Problem? also, gravel, as of now is pointless except for flint and airlocks and what not. But, notch is going to add some new stone that is composed of 4 gravel squares (kinda like sandstone is to sand).

Still though, I made this so that gravel would have more than ,like, 3 uses. Gravel is a large chuck of ground up rock, so it really it is a bit of an idea to be able to smelt that one double chest of gravel into something that looks nice.
BTW: Where did you here of the new gravel block thing?
Would be cool if water could flow through gravel. Would give it some new uses.
And if a lit torch (normal or redstone) was on top of a gravel block it stopped the flow (kind of like sauna rocks being too hot so the water trying to pass through evaporates). Then you'd even have proper water flow control.
In real life small rocks and such are often bound up with wire for use in water drainage, because water flows through them without displacing them.
Also would be nice if sand hydrated like dirt, but didn't allow water flow, would make beach sand look darker than desert sand. And perhaps have sand be usable as a way to determine if water is somewhere, for instance, by having a redstone torch on wet sand be doused while a redstone torch on dry sand be lit as normal.

Maybe but that would get boring. It wouldn't make much sense either. I did consider that though.

Yeah I would like to know that too.
