The roof of the nether is still the same as it was before the nether update: An expanse of netherrack with occasional spots of glowstone, nether quartz, or nether gold ore. Adding some kind of structure would definitely make it more interesting. Currently, no high-altitude structure exists in the game, so this would be a good place to start.
These structures would generate high above the floor of the nether, and would contain chests with decent loot, a smithing table, and (most of the time) a block of crying obsidian.
The image attached is a concept for a medium-sized suspended encampment.

Somewhere I think...
I honestly really like this idea. I love it when Mojang adds new structures into the game. Its probably what gets me most excited about new updates. I’ve been playing minecraft for a long time and its been a while, so I really hope something like this actually gets added.
The loot chest should have a ton of glowstone BTW.

Totalitarian architecture. Angular, defensible masonry over sleek, sloped carpentry.
Taking it slow. Provoking into attack typically does better rushing.
Underground engineering. Well-lit tunnels are much safer and often cheaper than any surface construct.
Farmability. One of primary concerns relating to any feature.
Practical mobs. No annoyances taking up space and processor power.
Generalism and simplicity. Overly complicated and specialized concepts hardly ever come into fruition.
