Minecraft definitely needs some sort of fast travel.
Very large distances to cover. Elytra is kind of end-game items.
You need fast travel to different Villages for trading, for example. Or, you can find yourself stuck in dungeon, or far frome home without map or compass. Or in ravine without pickaxe and planks to craft any.
I suggest some sort of portal or altar which you can build same way you build Nether portal - placing specific blocks in specific pattern. Lodestone should be in the center. After you activate this portal - you can teleport to it nomatter how far you would be from it. To do this - just use enchanted compass by clicking mouse button.
You teleport immediately at the position where Lodestone was placed. Lodestone itself will vanish (as whole portal structure). So you need to craft new one and place in the center of the new portal structure (and activate it somehow).
Portal parts (blocks) should be expensive - so you won`t use teleportation that much.
I feel that instant teleportation is an unbalanced mechanic and detracts from the core game play. As headgames001 said, Nether travel is Minecrafts form of fast travel and it should remain that way.

Every teleportation will cost some netherite ingots which is hard to obtain. So it will be quite expensive.
You wont use it too much probably because of that.
But in some situations it could be very handy and lifesaving.
I use Nether, but distance between my bases (one in jungle) is still to far. Even for Nether.
This would be not fit well in vanilla minecraft. If you want to fast travel, you can use the Nether, and if you're on an advanced server where nether elytra lanes won't cut it, there are at least three advanced contraptions that can for all intensive purposes teleport you thousands of blocks.
If the idea is to try to make it a quick way to escape death, then whatever situation is likely to kill you would have to take place near the portal. Most likely, this portal would be near your base. You're not likely to be in much danger if you're near your base. So, you would likely never have to use it.
Now, to make so you would actually use it in places likely to kill you, this teleport feature would have to be mobile. But then it would just be a craftable version of the Totem of Undying.

It suppose to be emergency measure.
That's what nether portals are for. The Nether makes it so you can have faster travel, but with a risk. Just as it should be.
