Something that is being debated with the nether update is the addition of nether boats!! I personally think they are a GREAT idea bit need something to keep them from being to OP!!
What I say do is make the nether boats out of the new nether woods like a regular boat, that just makes sense, but a new feature that should be added is an overheat bar.
The overheat bar would be what keeps the bpats from being to overpowered.
This bar would indicate to the player whether or not they are overheating, which is done by being too close to lava for a period of time.
Ways that the player could keep from overheating are wear armor (the stronger the less they overheat), drink water bottles, get into a cave, go someplace dark, or anything else that would cool them down.
Overheating could also be applied to places like the Desert or Savannah, as well as freezing in the snow biomes, on mountains, or in caves.
This not only would add another challenge to the nether but also to survival in general...a well needed challenge at that.
I’m honestly not sure why some form of lava boat hasn’t been added. It’s not any more OP than a regular boat.
As for this suggestion, I’m not a fan of the over heat mechanic. A temperature meter has been suggested time and time again and has always been denied because it's easy to get around and is just annoying.
A fuel slot/inventory for carrying things would be nice I think to balance it, I mean a particular resource that is Nether particular or expensive material for a recipe would make sense besides a fuel slot or other aspects. It could have a 'Lava Dismount' effect, that would be nice. (Just came about as of typing this)
I've looked at the Netherite Boat (in the Snapshot Ideas Fabric mod) and the Obsidian Boat from the April Fools 'Love and Hugs Update' and think they are a good use of a Nether Boat (other mods did good but these ones come to mind a lot for Nether Boats for me).

The new nether woods, while fire resistant, show no signs of floating in lava. I think maybe you would need attach a netherite ingot or something in order to make it float? idk
As for the overheat bar, we already have the food bar. We don't need yet another bar to manage. And having armor cool it down, while helpful, is just ridiculous. I wear clothes everyday and they don't help me cool down. In fact, they (slightly) do the opposite. If you want an armor based way to cool down, cooling down more out of armor would be nice. It would even give people a reason to take off armor.

Who's that behind you?
It sounds pretty good because instead of bridging in the Nether you can just use the boat to get from an island to another.
It's OP because you can swim in water quickly and without needing fire protection.
