Over the years I felt like the farming side of the game is lacking. I have come up with a couple of ideas to make farming more enjoyable and fun.
1. Corn
Found naturally in plain biomes and in their corresponding variants. This will have multiple uses such as a food source. If you smelt the corn you get corn on the cob. You can also make corn bread by crafting raw corn and bread together which will give you 6 extra food points. They will grow faster when there are cornflowers around in a 5 block radius. You can also make scarecrows from it to protect your crops from crows which I will mention later.
2. Rice
You will find this crop in jungle edges and swampland's in large patches around water sources. This crop you plant in one block of water and will grow 1 block out from the surface. You can make 2 sashimi from it by crafting 1 rice 1 dried kelp and 1 fish (salmon or cod only) in the crafting grid which will give you 4 hunger points. You can also make rice sheets which is crafted from two rice which will give you 1 hunger point. Chickens can be bred with rice as well.
3. Fruit Trees
These will spawn in the new orchard biome. You can find 6 types of fruit trees orange, apple, apricot, peach, pear, and cherry. Each tree will spawn up to 6 pieces of fruit every day and a half. Each tree has its own sapling and will take 1.5x longer to grow than regular trees. They are mainly used as a food source and each one will fill 2 food points. Bees have a higher chance to spawn in fruit trees as well.
4. Garlic
Found in birch forests, regular forests, and dark forests this can be used to make garlic bread (1 garlic and 1 bread) and will give you 6 food points. You can also hang them up outside your house and will fend off zombies who try to bust down your door. And will be useful in villager protection.
5. Blueberries and Strawberries.
These can be found in flower forests in bunches. When crafted with 1 sweet berry 1 blueberry and 1 strawberry and a bowl you can make a berry salad and will restore 8.5 hunger points.
6. Pineapples
These will spawn in Jungles and is hidden by the jungle foliage. When crafted with 1 milk bucket and 1 pineapple you can craft pineapples and cream and will restore 5.5 hunger points. You can also roast the pineapple and make roasted pineapple which will restore 4 hunger points.
7. Pumpkin and Melon Variants
When growing pumpkins you have a 25% chance to get a white pumpkin and a 1.5% chance to get a golden pumpkin. A golden pumpkin can be a trophy of some sort. For all the pumpkins when a soul fire torch is put into the pumpkin the jack' o lantern will emit blue light, a redstone torch red light, and a normal torch the default light. Melons have a 10% chance to be purple and is purely for cosmetic use.
8. New Flowers
Each flower can spawn in a specific biome or multiple biomes. Hibiscus, hydrangeas and birds of paradise (yes that's a flower) can spawn in jungles. Buttercups can spawn in any lush biome. Lavender and Iris's can spawn in any forest biome. And Carnations flowers can spawn in birch forests.
9. Crows and Scarecrows
Crows have a chance of spawning when crops without a scarecrow within a 8 block radius is present. They will destroy the crops if crops are left unprotected. You can craft a scarecrow from 13 corn 2 sticks 1 haybale and 1 sheared pumpkin.
10. Cheese
You get this from smelting milk in a bucket. It yields 3 cheese every time you smelt it. 1 cheese gives you 4 hunger points.
11. Coconuts
These will spawn in desert lakes as palm trees. Each palm tree will yield 3 to 2 coconuts when you shake it by right clicking the trunk. You can eat the coconut as it is and get 4 hunger points or is you shear it you can get 3 coconut shreds which will give 2 hunger points each.
12. Wax and candles
You can get 3 wax from a beehive if you right click it when full. You can craft candles from it using 1 wax and 1 string. The candles will burn forever and can be lit with a flint and steel. You can also craft wax blocks.
That's just a couple ideas I had for farming in Minecraft to make it more fun and exiting and trying to get every crop by exploring the world a bit more. Not every feature I mentioned has to be in Minecraft. Let me hear what you guys think about this. Minecraft definitely needs a farming update.
While I think on their own some of these would be nice to plant in a giant field such as the corn, I don't think Minecraft really needs new food in its current state. The game does not encourage eating new foods, and in fact, it instead encourages eating the most powerful food item you can craft if possible.
Going through this list:
Corn is a food item I could see being very useful. The mod you stole a screenshot of actually makes those corn plants difficult to walk through like cobwebs, which makes them actually useful for corn mazes. I think it'd also be interesting if corn brewed a Thick Potion, which would then be used in brewing certain types of potions. (This would be in reference to Corn's use in High Fructose Corn Syrup)
Rice, while it might be nice for the Chinese audience that wanted the Panda, would not be as useful as a food item. We already have one grain crop, and while the idea of sashimi sounds nice, I don't know that it's enough to justify a new crop at this moment in time.
Fruit Trees are very unnecessary. While I like the idea of taking Apples off Oak Trees and having fruit tree leaves that could be reused as "leaves with Christmas Ornaments", I don't think we need 5 new kinds of fruit.
Using Garlic to fend off zombies sounds like an interesting idea, but crops need a consumable use and this isn't one.
We don't really need new berries, although it's worth noting that Strawberries grow on vines which might at least make it an interesting crop to farm.
I don't see a particularly good need for pineapples. Maybe if you could place them they might make a nice tropical decoration, but I think that's still a stretch.
Pumpkin Variants sound interesting, and I like the idea of the new torches, but I don't really see the point in purple melons or white pumpkins. At most I could see how a white pumpkin might be useful as a skull-like decoration in conjunction with some bone blocks, but I still don't know that I'd get a lot of use out of it.
I don't have a problem with new flowers. I do think it'd be nice if the game placed them nicely though. It might be nice if Minecraft would generate fields of flowers on plains out of complimentary colors.
I don't like having to use scarecrows to keep my crops safe. I think they might make a nice decoration, but I don't want to have to either find and grow corn or put my crops in a greenhouse in order to keep them safe, that seems like a dumb requirement.
I don't have a problem with cheese, but it needs to be more useful than you've presented.
I like palm trees, but I don't think the game needs coconuts at the moment.
I like the idea of candles, though I think it'd be more interesting if you made candles out of tallow dropped from pigs. This would give pigs an alternative use as right now their sole use is to provide meat when you can't find any nearby cows.
To conclude, I like some of the ideas presented, but I think you need to show that some of these new foods can be more useful than just sprites we shove in our face, whether this be by making the crop itself useful or by making the food item useful in things like potions or non-food crafting recipes.

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.

Maybe the recipes could be improved a bit, as cornbread in real life contains no actual yeast or flour, and as such is not really bread in the normal sense. Although it doesn't seem viable, perhaps there could be some way of grinding the corn to make cornmeal, the recipe could also involve milk and egg, almost like cake but more simple. Just a thought.
Also, sashimi is just thinly sliced raw fish, while it can have rice on the side it doesn't usually contain it.
Perhaps there could be a few new crops added to minecraft, althought there as lots already... wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, trees (oak, birch, spruce, jungle, acacia, dark oak and the two new additions), brownmushrooms, redmushrooms, cocoabeans, sugarcane, cactus, kelp, netherwhart and so much more. There are so many options for food already but I admit, the idea of adding a few extras could be interesting although, colourful items such as pumpkins and melons seem cool, although, they don't really suit the vanilla feel of Minecraft. Fruittrees are an interesting concept but these would require specific trees depending on what each fruit grows on. What should be added, is new nether crops. As the only farmable nether crop is, well nether wart and now the new trees.
s I felt like the farming side of the game is lacking. I have come up with a couple of ideas to make farming more enjoyable and fun.Ok, a good concept and it seems good so far.
1. CornCornbread seems like a good alternative to Steak, but I don't really think Corn has much of a use. It could be good in building, though.
2. RiceYou will find this crop in jungle edges and swampland's in large patches around water sources. This crop you plant in one block of water and will grow 1 block out from the surface. You can make 2 sashimi from it by crafting 1 rice 1 dried kelp and 1 fish (salmon or cod only) I think Sashimi should require Tropical Fish, so we can have more of a use for it. in the crafting grid which will give you 4 hunger points. You can also make rice sheets which is crafted from two rice which will give you 1 hunger point. Chickens can be bred with rice as well. Ehh... I don't really think it's useful, in fact it's pretty useless. Even Sashimi doesn't have a use apart from being another food (and for the steps required).
3. Fruit TreesThese will spawn in the new orchard biome. Bees have a higher chance to spawn in fruit trees as well.Fruit trees also seem pretty useless. Although this could potentially be a cool concept, there's not really anything distinguishing them from other trees apart from the Bees and Fruit, and the number you suggested is also useless, as there's plenty of other food sources.
4. GarlicFound in birch forests, regular forests, and dark forests this can be used to make garlic bread (1 garlic and 1 bread) and will give you 6 food points. You can also hang them up outside your house and will fend off zombies who try to bust down your door. And will be useful in villager protection. Garlic seems like it become a really useful item!
5. Blueberries and Strawberries. These can be found in flower forests in bunches. When crafted with 1 sweet berry 1 blueberry and 1 strawberry and a bowl you can make a berry salad and will restore 8.5 hunger points. That is a lot of hunger for such little of a price, this could be a bit OP. This is pretty useless.
I think unique Pumpkin variants should be really rare. White Pumpkins should be unique to the Nether.
New flowers seem like a great cosmetic touch and ambient item!
This is missing details. What biomes do Crows spawn in? What health do they have? Are they hostile?
Another useless new food item.
What are Desert Lakes? This is also a useless food item.
Wax Blocks and Candles seem like a great idea!
Responses in Bold.
Some of the ideas seem great but most are extremely useless.
Some support, but not much overall.
