Many people lean one way or the other when talking about the 1.9 Combat Mechanics, and I can see both sides of the argument. On one hand, not being able to spam your sword does add a challenge to Survival that many felt was lacking until that point. On the other hand, many PvP scenarios feel nowhere near as tense as they used to be. While I myself have gotten used to the new mechanics, my 1.8 days are ones I still have fond memories of. Thus, I would like to propose the idea of making the 1.9 combat mechanics optional via a setting in the pause menu, that works per player instead of per world. That way, players can taylor their experience to one suitable for them. I don’t think a gamerule would be wise, though, because even if the command could only target the player executing it, the /execute command would render the targeting moot. I’m sure many players that left because of 1.9 would come back to the game if there was a toggle to the combat mechanics.
2)we already have a toggle for the two different combat systems, the launcher allows you to play in any version down to like 1.3 or something silly-ancient like that. Mods exist that can reintroduce features you liked from later versions, one of them is called Et Futura (not sure how modern it's kept itself, though).
3)between general public outcry and various initiatives to work around Mojang's decisions by implementing mods, Mojang has recognize there are problems with combat and are currently neck-deep in efforts to address these. These are collectively called Combat Test snapshots, they have to be manually downloaded and installed (they are not automatically available via the launcher like main-game snapshots are) and there's been 5 of them so far.
The problem with pre-1.9 combat is it favoring PC far too heavily. Since Mojang's eventual goal is for Minecraft to be cross-compatible on all platforms, this isn't ever going to happen.
And, why make 1.9 combat toggleable per player? It not only deals with cooldown but also armor penetration and sharpness nerfs. Who in their right mind would not choose the OP spam-clicking and armor?

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.
Feel free to drop by for a chat whenever.
If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
I understand that they are trying to make us reunion under one game, rather than split us into different part of the game. However the new combat test really doesn't make me satisfied.I mean, when you talking about PvP and balance there really should be someone do the math, rather than all of us just thinking and talking with out tests and calculations. And it seems not many of us have done it.
